Anatomically, the Herto skulls show both old and new traits. Like modern humans, they have a high cranial vault, which is a raised forehead. They also have a globular shape when viewed from the side. Their brain volume was approximately 1,450 cc. However, they also possessed more robust features. They had projecting brow ridges and a strongly flexed occipital bone at the back of the skull. Their skulls were notably longer and larger than the average present-day human skull. These details help scientists map the gradual changes in the human face and braincase.
Life for Herto Man took place in a lakeside environment. The area was a sandy fluvial unit, meaning it was shaped by rivers. This environment provided plenty of food, such as bovines and hippos. Archaeologists found 640 stone tools at the site. These tools were made from materials like obsidian and fine-grained basalt. The tools show a mix of different cultural traditions. Some used the Levallois technique, which is linked to the Middle Stone Age. Others were bifaces, which are associated with the earlier Acheulean tradition.
Evidence suggests these people may have had complex social behaviors. Some of the most complete skulls bear manmade cut marks. These marks appear to be from defleshing, or removing flesh from the bone. For example, the juvenile skull shows deep marks along the underside of the bones. Some researchers believe these marks are evidence of mortuary practices. This means they might have been performing symbolic rituals to honor the dead. Such behaviors show a level of cultural complexity that is very important to study.
