They found the specimens lived between 7.11 and 7.37 million years ago. This makes Graecopithecus roughly 200,000 years older than Sahelanthropus tchadensis, a known hominid in Africa. The team proposed a theory called the "North Side Story." This theory suggests that human ancestors originated in the Mediterranean region. They argued that these ancestors later migrated into Africa to evolve into the genus Homo. This would change the widely accepted idea that humans always originated in Africa.
