Their bodies were unique too. They could walk long distances like we do. But they were also very good at climbing trees. Their teeth show they ate gritty foods. They likely ate things like nuts and tubers. Some people think they even buried their dead in the cave. This is still a big mystery for scientists to study.
Scientists have discovered a very special group of ancient people called Homo naledi. 

Learning how Homo naledi lived involves looking closely at their bones. Their bodies had a mix of different features. They could walk long distances with a stride like ours. However, they were also very good at climbing trees. 
This amazing find happened in the Rising Star Cave system. In September 2013, two cavers named Rick Hunter and Steven Tucker found fossils. They even called the team the "Underground Astronauts."
The fossils found in the cave are truly incredible. Researchers found 1,550 pieces of bone from at least 15 different people. These pieces came from 737 different parts of the skeleton. They found bones from adults, children, and even infants. The bones lived in the cave between 335,000 and 236,000 years ago. This was found using special dating methods on teeth and soil. Their brain size ranged from 465 to 610 cubic centimeters. In contrast, modern humans have a much larger capacity of 1,270 to 1,330 cubic centimeters. 
The skull of Homo naledi shows interesting details. The skull shape is slender, similar to other Homo species. They had a well-developed brow-ridge. They also had a pronounced occipital bun, which is a bump on the back of the skull. Their tooth development was also unusual. The second molar erupted late in life, much like in modern humans. This suggests they might have had a slower maturation rate. Some researchers even suggest they may have practiced deliberate burial. They believe individuals might have been carried into the chamber. Others suggest they might have carved signs in the rocks, though many scientists question this.
Scientists continue to study how Homo naledi relates to other humans. It is still unclear exactly when they branched off from other species. They might be related to Homo habilis or Homo erectus. Some researchers believe they are an early offshoot of Homo erectus. Others suggest they might have interbred with late australopithecines. Regardless of their exact place, they expand our knowledge of the genus Homo. They show us that the path of human history was not a simple straight line. Instead, it was a complex web of different types of people living at the same time.
