Scientists study old bones to learn about our past.

Another skull was found in Ethiopia. This is the Bodo cranium. A cranium is a skull. The Bodo skull is about 600,000 years old. It was found near the Awash River. This skull is a big link in our history. It has some parts like older humans. It also has some parts like us. For example, it has a large brain size. Its brain size is about 1250 cc. Most scientists think these fossils belong to a group called Homo heidelbergensis. This group lived between older humans and modern humans. These fossils help us see how we changed over a long time.

These fossils show us how the human body was changing. The Kabwe skull was found in a lead mine in Zambia.

Finding these fossils was a big job for many people. In 1921, two miners found the Kabwe skull in Northern Rhodesia.

There are many important facts about these ancient people. The Bodo site also had stone tools called Acheulean hand axes.

Learning about these fossils is like following a long path.
Homo rhodesiensis is a name used to classify certain ancient human fossils.
To understand these fossils, we must look at their physical features. Many of these specimens show a mix of old and new traits. They possess a large supraorbital torus, which is a thick ridge of bone above the eyes. This feature is similar to the older species Homo erectus. However, they also show signs of a larger brain. For example, the Bodo cranium has a cranial capacity of about 1250 cc. This is within the lower range of modern Homo sapiens.
Several distinct fossil finds help scientists study this transition. The Kabwe 1 skull is a primary example of this group. It was dated to between 324,000 and 274,000 years ago. Another important find is the Bodo cranium from Ethiopia. This skull is much older, dating back roughly 600,000 years.
The history of these discoveries involves many different people and places. In 1921, two miners discovered the Kabwe skull in the Broken Hill lead mine.
These fossils provide specific details about ancient life and behavior. At the Bodo site, researchers found Acheulean tools, such as hand axes and cleavers.
Scientists also study the exact measurements of these ancient skulls. The Bodo cranium is quite large, with a length of 21 cm. It is 15.87 cm wide and 19.05 cm high.
There is ongoing debate about how these species connect to the broader human family tree. Some researchers suggest these fossils represent a lineage between Homo erectus and modern humans. In 2021, some scientists proposed a new name, Homo bodoensis, for these African specimens. They wanted to move away from the name Homo rhodesiensis due to its historical associations. However, other experts have rejected these new names. They argue that the existing classifications better explain the complex history of the Middle Pleistocene. Regardless of the name, these fossils remain a crucial link in understanding our origins.
