We all belong to a group called Homo sapiens. This name was given by a scientist named Linnaeus in 1758. In Latin, the word homō means "human being." The word sapiēns means "wise" or "intelligent." So, our name basically means "intelligent human."

How did we become Homo sapiens? Scientists think we split from older ancestors a long time ago. One group of ancestors was called Homo erectus.
