Carrier's most famous invention began as a solution to a specific industrial problem. In 1902, a printing company in Brooklyn, New York, struggled with air quality. The summer humidity caused their paper to grow and shrink. This was a major issue because color printing required running paper through a press up to four times. If the paper changed size, the colors would not line up correctly. Carrier designed a system to solve this. His 1902 installation was the first modern air conditioning system because it controlled humidity. Experts later agreed that air conditioning must perform four tasks: control temperature, control humidity, circulate air, and cleanse the air.

Carrier continued to refine his technology through many stages of development. In 1906, he was granted a patent for an Apparatus for Treating Air. This was the world's first spray-type air conditioning equipment. The machine worked by using water to either humidify or dehumidify the air. To make the air wetter, the machine heated the water. To make the air drier, the machine cooled the water. During this time, Carrier discovered a mathematical principle. He found that constant dew-point depression provided nearly constant relative humidity. This became known as the "law of constant dew-point depression."

To make these machines work perfectly, Carrier needed complex math. In 1911, he presented a famous document to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. This paper was titled "Rational Psychrometric Formulae." It is often called the "Magna Carta of Psychrometrics." Psychrometrics is the study of gas-vapor mixtures, like air and water vapor. His formulas linked relative humidity, absolute humidity, and dew-point temperature. This allowed engineers to design systems that fit specific needs exactly. He later filed a patent for an automatic control system based on these ideas in 1907.

Carrier's professional journey involved several major companies and shifts. He started as a research engineer for the Buffalo Forge Company. In 1908, a subsidiary called the Carrier Air Conditioner Company of America was formed. However, World War I changed things for his employer.
