Before his invention, stopping a train was a very hard job. Workers had to run along the tops of moving cars to pull brakes by hand. This was dangerous and made it hard to stop quickly. Westinghouse created a system using compressed air to stop the train. He used an air compressor and a pipe that ran the whole length of the train. This allowed the engineer to stop all the cars at the same time. He later improved this so that if a pipe broke, the brakes would turn on automatically.

In 1893, his company lit up the "White City" at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. In 1895, his company opened a large AC power plant at Niagara Falls, New York. This was the first large-scale plant of its kind in the world. Throughout his life, Westinghouse received 360 patents for his many inventions. He started 61 different companies during his career. He lived during a period of massive technological expansion in the United States. Born in 1846 in Central Bridge, New York, he grew up in a family of machine shop owners. His ancestors moved from Germany through England before settling in America. Westinghouse displayed a natural talent for machinery from a very young age. He even served as an engineer in the Union Navy during the Civil War.

After the war, he returned to his father's workshop to hone his skills. By age 19, he had already earned his first patent for a rotary steam engine.

One of his most significant contributions was the development of the railway air brake.

Before his invention, stopping a train was a manual and extremely dangerous process. Brakemen had to run along catwalks on top of moving cars to apply brakes by hand. This made it difficult to coordinate stops and limited train lengths to about ten cars. Thousands of workers were injured or killed each year due to these methods. In 1869, Westinghouse demonstrated a system that used compressed air to stop trains. His design used an air compressor and a reservoir in the locomotive. A single pipe ran the length of the train to control all the brakes at once.

Westinghouse continuously improved his braking technology to make it safer.

His first version was not completely fail-safe. If an air line ruptured or disconnected, the train would lose its braking power. To fix this, he and his engineers inverted the entire process. They designed valves so that constant air pressure kept the brakes disengaged. They also added an air reservoir to every individual car. This meant that any interruption in the air line would automatically cause the brakes to apply. This breakthrough revolutionized the railroad industry and made long-distance travel much safer.

Beyond railroads, Westinghouse was a pioneer in the natural gas industry.

In 1884, his drilling crew struck a massive pocket of gas at a depth of 1,500 feet. The resulting blast was so powerful it blew the top off the drilling derrick. Westinghouse spent a week developing a method to cap the gas flow safely. He saw the potential to use this gas for heating and lighting homes. During the 1880s, a major competition emerged between different types of electricity. Thomas Edison promoted direct current (DC), which was used for early incandescent bulbs. However, DC had a major limitation in its transmission range. Because of losses from low voltages and high currents, DC stations could only reach about one mile. Westinghouse recognized the potential of alternating current (AC) to solve this problem. He realized AC could be moved over much longer distances to reach more people.

This was possible because of the electrical transformer.

Westinghouse worked with physicist William Stanley to improve existing transformer designs. A transformer allows electricity to be "stepped up" to a higher voltage for long-distance travel. Once the electricity reaches its destination, another transformer "steps it down" to a lower, safer voltage for homes. This allowed for large, centralized power plants to serve entire regions. In 1886, Westinghouse founded the Westinghouse Electric Corporation to pursue this technology. His success was proven when he won the contract to light the "White City" at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

His achievements in electricity culminated in massive industrial projects.
