If the engine kicked back, it could cause serious injury. In February 1911, Delco developed a practical electric self-starter. Kettering designed an electrical system that performed three essential functions. It acted as the starter, the producer of sparks for ignition, and the source of current for lighting.

Kettering's automotive innovations led to massive industrial growth. In 1912, Henry M. Leland ordered 12,000 self-starters for Cadillac models. This required Delco to move from research into large-scale production. The invention was so successful it won the Dewar Trophy in 1913. In 1916, Kettering sold Delco to the United Motors Company. The sale price was $2.5 million. This success helped him lead various companies, including Flxible Sidecar Company. He also helped found the Engineers Club of Dayton in 1914.
