People have lived in this region for a very long time. Some studies say humans arrived over 50,000 years ago. 
Today, the region is made of six different provinces.

Human history in this region is incredibly long. Evidence suggests humans have inhabited the island for over 50,000 years. 

European influence changed the political structure of the region. In the late 16th century, European traders arrived for the spice trade. The Dutch Empire eventually became the dominant power. They annexed the western part of New Guinea into the Dutch East Indies. The Dutch called the area Nieuw Guinea. They remained in control until 1962. Following negotiations, the Dutch transferred the territory to the United Nations Temporary Executive Authority (UNTEA). In 1969, Indonesia took control after the Act of Free Choice.
The region has used many different official names over time. Between 1895 and 1962, it was Netherlands New Guinea. From 1962 to 1973, it was known as West New Guinea or West Irian. It was called Irian Jaya from 1973 until 2002. Today, the official name is Papua. The names used often depend on political views. Independence activists frequently use the name West Papua. Indonesian officials also use West Papua to name the westernmost province. The name Irian was once an acronym for joining the Republic of Indonesia and opposing the Netherlands.
Today, the region is governed as six autonomous provinces.
The economy relies on several major industries. Agriculture and fishing are very important for local people. The highlands have been a center for agriculture for thousands of years. For instance, people have grown bananas there for at least 7,000 years. The region also has massive natural resources. Mining and oil production are key industries. The land contains valuable minerals like gold and nickel. 
Western New Guinea is also famous for its unique biology. The region is home to many beautiful bird species. There are over 300 species of birds on the peninsula.
