The population of West Papua has changed recently due to administrative shifts. In mid-2025, the estimated population was 587,645 people. This total included 308,424 males and 279,221 females. The population density is relatively low, similar to the density found in Russia. In December 2022, the province underwent a major change. The western half of the Bird's Head Peninsula was separated to form Southwest Papua. This new province took 52% of the previous population with it. As a result, West Papua is now the second-least-populous province in Indonesia.
History in this region stretches back tens of thousands of years. Evidence suggests human habitation began over 50,000 years ago. In the highlands, agriculture developed gradually over many thousands of years. For example, the banana has been cultivated in this region for at least 7,000 years. Later, Austronesian peoples migrated through Maritime Southeast Asia. They settled in the area at least 3,000 years ago, particularly in Cenderawasih Bay. The region has also been a site of trade for many centuries. Ancient empires like the Srivijaya empire and the Majapahit empire interacted with the area.
Various maritime powers and sultanates influenced the coastal areas of the province. The Tidore Sultanate controlled parts of the Bird's Head Peninsula and coastal regions. They participated in trade involving spices, resins, and bird-of-paradise feathers. The Sultan of Tidore even claimed the title of "Sultan of Tidore and Papua" during a revolt in the 1780s. European explorers also arrived and left many names for the land. In 1545, the Spanish explorer Yñigo Ortiz de Retez named the island Nueva Guinea. He chose this name because the inhabitants resembled people from the Guinea coast in West Africa. The Dutch later referred to the area as Nieuw Guinea.
The name of the province has shifted through many different official titles. It was known as Netherlands New Guinea from 1895 to 1962. Following the New York Agreement, control was transferred to Indonesia. The name Irian Jaya was used for many years during the Suharto administration. This name was suggested by Frans Kaisiepo and was based on local myths and languages. The name "Irian" was later used as an acronym by Marthin Indey and Silas Papare. The province was officially renamed Papua Barat in 2007. Today, the International Organization for Standardization uses the official name "Papua" for the region.
Modern West Papua is experiencing significant economic and structural changes. In 2018, the province recorded an economic growth rate of 7.7%. This rate was higher than the national economic growth of Indonesia. To support this growth, the Indonesian government is building ambitious infrastructure projects. These include the Trans-Papua Highway and various new airports.
