Scientists now place them in their own extinct family called Stegodontidae. These animals were very important to the worlds they lived in. They lived in many different places, including Africa and much of Asia.

Some fossils have even been found as far as southeast Europe and Greece. They were likely social animals that lived together in herds. This is something we still see in elephants today.

Stegodon had a very special way of eating. Their name comes from Greek words meaning "to cover" and "tooth." This is because their molar teeth had ridges that looked like they covered the surface.

These ridges were made of parallel lines called lamellae. To use them, they moved their lower jaws in a forward motion. This is called proal movement, where the jaw strokes from back to front. Some species used these teeth to graze on grass. Other species were browsers, meaning they ate leaves from trees and bushes.

We know a lot about them because of fossils found by scientists. A British scientist named Hugh Falconer first named the genus in 1857.

He originally thought they were a type of elephant. Over time, researchers learned they were likely descended from an older animal called Stegolophodon. Stegolophodon lived in Asia during the Miocene epoch. Eventually, Stegodon moved from Asia into Africa. While they died out in Africa a long time ago, they stayed in Asia much longer.

Stegodon came in many different sizes. Some were truly huge. The species Stegodon zdanskyi lived in China and was very tall. It might have weighed about 10 tons.

Another species, Stegodon ganesa from India, had massive tusks. One tusk was so large it was much bigger than modern elephant tusks. However, some Stegodon became very small through a process called insular dwarfism. This happened when they moved to small islands with less food.

On the island of Sumba, one species was only 8% the size of mainland animals.

These animals were also great at moving around. Many scientists believe they were good swimmers. This helped them travel across the ocean to reach islands like Japan, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

Once they reached these islands, they changed to fit their new homes. On the island of Flores, they were the main large animals. They might have even been food for the famous Komodo dragon. Even though they are gone now, their fossils tell a wonderful story of how life changes.

Stegodon was an extinct genus of proboscidean animals. Proboscideans are a group of animals that includes modern elephants.

While they were once grouped with the family Elephantidae, scientists now place them in their own extinct family called Stegodontidae. The name Stegodon comes from Ancient Greek words meaning "to cover" and "tooth." This refers to the distinctive ridges on their molar teeth. These animals were important members of many ancient ecosystems across Africa and much of Asia.

The way a Stegodon ate was very specific. Their molar teeth contained parallel lamellae, which are thin, plate-like layers. These layers formed ridges on the surface of the teeth. To use these ridges, the animals used a proal movement. This means they moved their lower jaws in a forward stroke, from the back to the front.

This jaw movement is different from many other animals. Interestingly, this specific way of chewing evolved independently in both elephants and stegodontids. Depending on the species and the environment, they could be grazers that ate grass or browsers that ate leaves and bushes.

The physical shape of a Stegodon was quite unique. Their skulls were relatively tall but short, similar to modern elephants. However, their lower jaws were shortened, a trait called brevirostrine. They also lacked the lower tusks or incisors found in some earlier ancestors. Their tusks were proportionally very large and curved slightly upward.

These tusks often grew parallel to each other. They were sometimes so close that a Stegodon's trunk might have rested on top of them. This is different from modern elephants, whose trunks hang freely between their tusks.

Stegodon species varied wildly in size. The Chinese species Stegodon zdanskyi is suggested to be the largest. An old male found near the Yellow River was very tall and may have weighed approximately 10 tons.

In India, the species Stegodon ganesa reached a shoulder height of about 2.5 meters. Its body mass was around 4 tons. One specific tusk from this species was estimated to have a mass much larger than the largest modern elephant tusk.

Other species, like Stegodon orientalis, were roughly the same size as a modern Asian elephant.

Some Stegodon populations underwent a process called insular dwarfism. This happened when animals lived on islands with limited land and fewer predators. As a result, their body sizes became much smaller over time.

On the island of Flores, the species Stegodon florensis changed significantly. The earlier subspecies was about 50% the size of mainland species. By the Late Pleistocene, the subspecies Stegodon florensis insularis had shrunk to only about 17% of the mainland size. On the island of Sumba, Stegodon sumbaensis was estimated to be only 8% of the size of mainland species.

Scientists believe Stegodon were excellent swimmers. This ability likely allowed them to travel across water to reach remote islands in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Japan.

In the Japanese archipelago, a succession of dwarf species lived from about 4 million to 1 million years ago. These included Stegodon miensis, Stegodon protoaurorae, and Stegodon aurorae. Each species showed a progressive reduction in size over time. This was likely caused by the shrinking land area of the islands.

The history of discovering Stegodon began with the British paleontologist Hugh Falconer. In 1857, he named the genus.

He originally thought they were a subgenus of Elephas, the genus of modern Asian elephants. We now know they likely descended from an older genus called Stegolophodon from the Miocene epoch. While they once lived in Africa, they became extinct there during the Pliocene. However, they survived in South, Southeast, and Eastern Asia until the Late Pleistocene. They are now considered an extinct lineage with no modern descendants.
