Long ago, a group of animals lived that looked like elephants. We call them deinotheres. 
Deinotheres had a very special look. They did not have tusks on their top jaw. Instead, they had two long teeth on their bottom jaw. These teeth curved down and back like big hooks. 
These animals grew to be very large. Some species were even bigger than modern elephants. 
As time went on, deinotheres changed. They grew larger and larger. Three main groups lived in a set of steps. First came Chilgatherium. Then came Prodeinotherium. Finally, Deinotherium appeared. The last ones lived in Africa. They died out about 1 million years ago. We do not know exactly why they disappeared.
Deinotheriidae were a family of prehistoric animals that looked like elephants. These animals lived during a long time called the Cenozoic era. They were very special because of their unique tusks. Most elephants have tusks on their top jaws. Deinotheres had no tusks on their upper jaws at all. Instead, they had two large teeth on their bottom jaws. These teeth curved downward and backward like a big hook. 
These animals were built to eat plants from trees. They were "shearing browsers," which means they ate leaves and branches above the ground. They used their bottom tusks to strip bark from trees. Their teeth worked in a very specific way to help them eat. They used their front teeth to crush food into small pieces. Then, their back teeth used a vertical shearing action to slice the plants. This is different from how modern elephants chew. 
The history of these animals shows how they changed over millions of years. The first deinothere was named Chilgatherium. It lived in Ethiopia about 27 or 28 million years ago. Later, a group called Prodeinotherium appeared. These were smaller and lived in places like Europe and Asia. Eventually, the huge Deinotherium genus took their place. Each new group replaced the one that came before it. 
Deinotheres grew to be truly massive over time. The earliest ones were quite small. However, later species became some of the largest land mammals to ever live. Some species of Deinotherium were much bigger than modern African bush elephants. They could reach a shoulder height of over 4 meters. Their body mass was also much higher than today's elephants. 
You can think of deinotheres as the giant forest travelers of the ancient world. As the world changed, they had to adapt to new lands. In Europe, some species grew longer legs to walk across wide grasslands. This helped them move from one forest to another more easily. The very last deinotheres lived in Africa. The species Deinotherium bozasi died out about 1 million years ago. We do not know the exact reason why they disappeared. 
Deinotheriidae was a family of prehistoric, elephant-like animals known as proboscideans. These creatures lived during the Cenozoic era, a vast stretch of geological time. They are most famous for their very unusual tusks. Unlike modern elephants, deinotheres had no tusks on their upper jaws. Instead, they possessed two large, downward-curving tusks on their lower jaws. These tusks functioned like massive hooks that curved both downward and backward. 
These animals were specialized "shearing browsers," meaning they focused on eating plants located above the ground. Their mouths were perfectly designed for this specific diet of soft, non-gritty forest vegetation. They used their front teeth to crush plant material into smaller pieces. Then, they used their back teeth, known as molars, for a vertical shearing action. This process sliced the plants rather than grinding them. 
The physical structure of a deinothere was quite similar to a modern elephant. They had long legs and a heavy body, though their skulls were flatter than those of true elephants. Their lower tusks were not used for digging in the dirt. Instead, they used these hooks to strip bark or pull down branches. 
The evolutionary history of this family follows a clear succession of three main genera. First, the earliest known deinothere was *Chilgatherium*. It lived in the Chilga district of Ethiopia during the late Oligocene, about 27 to 28 million years ago. It was a much smaller animal than its descendants. Next came the genus *Prodeinotherium*, which appeared in the early Miocene. These were modest-sized animals that migrated from Africa into Eurasia. Finally, the genus *Deinotherium* emerged during the late middle Miocene. Each new genus eventually replaced the one that came before it.


The very last members of the family were the species *Deinotherium bozasi*. They survived until the end of the Early Pleistocene, roughly 1 million years ago. The youngest known fossils were found in the Kanjera Formation of Kenya. While these animals were incredibly successful for millions of years, they eventually vanished. Scientists do not yet know the exact cause of their extinction. We only know that they disappeared around the same time as several other large African animals. Their story remains a fascinating look at how giants adapt to a changing world.
