Each new group replaced the one that came before it.

Deinotheres grew to be truly massive over time. The earliest ones were quite small. However, later species became some of the largest land mammals to ever live. Some species of Deinotherium were much bigger than modern African bush elephants. They could reach a shoulder height of over 4 meters. Their body mass was also much higher than today's elephants.

In Europe, a species called Deinotherium giganteum was very common during the late Miocene epoch.

You can think of deinotheres as the giant forest travelers of the ancient world. As the world changed, they had to adapt to new lands. In Europe, some species grew longer legs to walk across wide grasslands. This helped them move from one forest to another more easily. The very last deinotheres lived in Africa. The species Deinotherium bozasi died out about 1 million years ago. We do not know the exact reason why they disappeared.

Deinotheriidae was a family of prehistoric, elephant-like animals known as proboscideans. These creatures lived during the Cenozoic era, a vast stretch of geological time. They are most famous for their very unusual tusks. Unlike modern elephants, deinotheres had no tusks on their upper jaws. Instead, they possessed two large, downward-curving tusks on their lower jaws. These tusks functioned like massive hooks that curved both downward and backward.

These animals were specialized "shearing browsers," meaning they focused on eating plants located above the ground. Their mouths were perfectly designed for this specific diet of soft, non-gritty forest vegetation. They used their front teeth to crush plant material into smaller pieces. Then, they used their back teeth, known as molars, for a vertical shearing action. This process sliced the plants rather than grinding them.

This method of chewing was quite different from other animals. For example, gomphotheres used lateral grinding, which is a side-to-side motion. Modern elephants use horizontal shearing. The deinotheres' unique teeth show very little wear, which confirms they ate soft plants rather than tough, gritty grasses.

The physical structure of a deinothere was quite similar to a modern elephant. They had long legs and a heavy body, though their skulls were flatter than those of true elephants. Their lower tusks were not used for digging in the dirt. Instead, they used these hooks to strip bark or pull down branches.

As the environment changed, their bodies changed too. In Europe, the species *Deinotherium giganteum* developed longer lower forelimbs compared to the earlier *Prodeinotherium*. This longer limb helped them create a more efficient stride. This was a helpful adaptation as they traveled across expanding savannas to move from one forest to another.

The evolutionary history of this family follows a clear succession of three main genera. First, the earliest known deinothere was *Chilgatherium*. It lived in the Chilga district of Ethiopia during the late Oligocene, about 27 to 28 million years ago. It was a much smaller animal than its descendants. Next came the genus *Prodeinotherium*, which appeared in the early Miocene. These were modest-sized animals that migrated from Africa into Eurasia. Finally, the genus *Deinotherium* emerged during the late middle Miocene. Each new genus eventually replaced the one that came before it.

Over millions of years, these animals underwent a massive increase in body size. While *Chilgatherium* was relatively small, later members of the *Deinotherium* genus became giants. Some species were among the largest land mammals to ever live. They reached shoulder heights of over 4 meters. Their body mass significantly exceeded that of the modern African bush elephant. In fact, after the extinction of the *paraceratheres*, deinotheres were the largest animals walking the Earth. Even the massive mammoths of the Pleistocene did not reach the same scale as these giants.

The decline of the deinotheres began toward the end of the Miocene. In Asia, the species *D. indicum* died out about 7 million years ago. Scientists believe climate change may have caused this, similar to how it affected other large animals. In Europe, *D. giganteum* survived longer but its numbers dwindled. The last recorded specimen in Europe was found in Romania. However, the family continued to flourish in Africa throughout the Pliocene. They lived in the same African regions where fossils of early hominids have also been discovered.

The very last members of the family were the species *Deinotherium bozasi*. They survived until the end of the Early Pleistocene, roughly 1 million years ago. The youngest known fossils were found in the Kanjera Formation of Kenya. While these animals were incredibly successful for millions of years, they eventually vanished. Scientists do not yet know the exact cause of their extinction. We only know that they disappeared around the same time as several other large African animals. Their story remains a fascinating look at how giants adapt to a changing world.
