It belonged to a group called proboscideans. This is the same group that includes modern elephants. Some species were even larger than the elephants we see today. For example, adult males of the species Deinotherium giganteum could reach a shoulder height of 3.8 meters. They were also very heavy, weighing about 11 tonnes. These giant animals lived in many different places. They ranged across East Africa and much of Eurasia.

This animal had a very unique way it worked. Most elephants have tusks that grow from their upper jaw. However, Deinotherium had tusks that grew from its lower jaw, or mandible. These tusks grew downward and then curved back toward the neck. They could grow to be 3 meters long.

Their teeth were also different from modern elephants. They had teeth that looked more like those of a tapir. These teeth were used for shearing and crushing plants. This helped them act as browsers, which means they ate mostly leaves.

Finding out about Deinotherium was a long and messy process. In 1613, some large bones were found in France. Some people thought these bones belonged to a giant king named Theutobochus. However, experts like Jean Riolan argued they were just large animals. Later, in 1634, a man named Peiresc decided the story was a hoax. He found that the coins found with the bones were not what people thought. Eventually, the bones were placed in a museum. Scientists later realized they belonged to Deinotherium.

Many different scientists helped name and study these creatures. In 1715, René de Réaumur found fossilized teeth in turquoise mines. In 1822, Georges Cuvier called them "giant tapir relatives." Later, in 1829, Johann Jakob von Kaup gave them the official name Deinotherium. The name comes from Ancient Greek words meaning "terrible beast."

Scientists found remains in many places, including France, Germany, India, and Romania. In Bulgaria, a nearly complete animal was found in 1965. These fossils help us see how the animal lived.

We can compare Deinotherium to animals we know today to understand it. While it looks like an elephant, its body was built differently. Its neck was longer and its legs were more slender.

These animals thrived until about 1 million years ago. They likely disappeared when forests turned into open grasslands.

Deinotherium was a genus of massive, extinct proboscideans. Proboscideans are the group of animals that includes modern elephants. These creatures lived from the Middle Miocene until the end of the Early Pleistocene. They were widespread across the Earth. They ranged from East Africa to Eurasia, covering Western Europe and the Indian subcontinent.

Deinotherium had a very different body than modern elephants. They had more slender limbs and a notably more flexible neck. Their skulls were short, low, and flattened on top. This is different from modern elephants, which have high, domed foreheads. They also had a large, retracted nasal opening. This opening shows they possessed a proboscis, or trunk.

The most striking feature of Deinotherium was its tusks. In modern elephants, tusks grow from the upper jaw. In Deinotherium, the tusks grew from the lower jaw, known as the mandible. These tusks grew downward and curved backward. Some specimens had tusks that formed an almost semicircular shape. Others had tusks that grew almost vertically. These tusks could reach a length of 3 meters.

Their teeth also worked differently than those of modern elephants. They had teeth that resembled those of a tapir. They possessed two sets of teeth: bilophodont and trilophodont teeth. These teeth had two or three ridges. The molars and rear premolars were used for shearing plants. The other premolars were used for crushing. This setup made them browsers, meaning they primarily ate leaves.

Deinotherium was incredibly large. Some species were much bigger than modern elephants. For example, adult males of Deinotherium giganteum reached 3.8 meters at the shoulder. They could weigh as much as 11 tonnes. Another species, D. bozasi, reached 4 meters at the shoulder and weighed 13 tonnes.

The history of discovering Deinotherium was full of controversy. In 1613, large bones were found in France. Some people claimed these were the remains of a giant king named Theutobochus. However, experts like Jean Riolan argued the bones belonged to a large animal. Later, in 1634, Peiresc concluded the story was a hoax. He found the coins found with the bones were not what people claimed. Eventually, the bones were recognized as belonging to Deinotherium.

Many scientists helped define this genus. In 1822, Georges Cuvier called the remains "Tapirs gigantesques." In 1829, Johann Jakob von Kaup gave them the name Deinotherium. This name comes from Ancient Greek and means "terrible beast." Scientists have found remains in many places, including Germany, Romania, and Bulgaria. In Bulgaria, a nearly complete animal was found in 1965.

Deinotherium likely went extinct due to environmental changes. During the latter half of the Neogene, forested areas were replaced by open grasslands. As browsers, these animals relied on leaves from forests. This change in habitat likely made it hard for them to survive. They thrived the longest in Africa, where they lived until about 1 million years ago.
