He worked with a lower jaw gifted to Moscow University by Princess Ekaterina Dashkova. He named the type species Elasmotherium sibiricum in 1809. For much of the 19th century, scientists disagreed on its identity. Some thought it was a link between elephants and rhinos. Others thought it was related to horses or was even an aquatic mammal.

It was not until 1877 that Johann Friedrich von Brandt described a complete skull. This discovery proved once and for all that Elasmotherium was a rhinoceros.

As the Elasmotheriinae subfamily declined during the late Miocene, Elasmotherium persisted. They migrated from China into Europe and Central Asia around 2.6 million years ago. They were part of a broader shift in mammalian populations during the Pleistocene. Their evolution and eventual extinction provide important data about how large mammals respond to changing environments.
