A notable feature is the Green Belt. This is a protected area that forms a ring around the city's road system. It creates a boundary between the dense urban center and the more rural surrounding areas.

The climate in Rennes is described as oceanic. While it is in Brittany, it receives considerably less precipitation than the western parts of the region. For example, rainfall in Rennes is only about half of what is seen in Quimper. This makes the rainfall levels comparable to parts of western Germany. The city receives between 1,700 and 1,850 hours of sunshine every year. This amount of sunlight is similar to what is received in Lausanne.

History shows that Rennes has deep roots spanning more than 2,000 years. It began as a small Gallican village known as Condate. In ancient times, it was one of the major cities of the Duchy of Brittany, alongside Vannes and Nantes. From the early sixteenth century until the French Revolution, it served as a parliamentary and administrative center. The 17th-century Parliament's Palace stands as evidence of this role. The city also played a part in the Stamped Paper Revolt of 1675. A destructive fire in 1720 changed the look of the city forever. Most of the medieval wooden center was destroyed. Consequently, the northern part of the city was rebuilt using stone on a grid plan. The southern part, which was poorer, was not rebuilt in the same way.
