It is the third largest city in northwestern France, following Nantes and Rennes. This makes it a very important center for the whole region.

Nature plays a big role in how the city looks. Three rivers named the Mayenne, the Sarthe, and the Loir flow from the north. They meet just north of the city to form the Maine river. This new river flows through Angers and then moves south into the Loire river. The land is quite hilly in many spots. A high, rocky area rises above the valley floor. This high ground is where the oldest parts of the city sit. Because of the rivers and floodplains, the city mostly grows from east to west.

The history of Angers goes back a very long time. A man named Ptolemy first mentioned the city around AD 150. Back then, it had a different name: Juliomagus. This name came from the Latin word Julius and a Celtic word for market.

Later, the city became the capital of the province of Anjou. It was a strong place for the Plantagenet family. During the time of René of Anjou, it became a famous center for learning in Europe. You can still see old city walls that were built to protect people long ago.

Today, Angers is famous for many different things. The massive château of the Plantagenêts stands in the old center. Inside this castle, you can find the Apocalypse Tapestry. This is the largest collection of medieval tapestries in the world. The city is also a leader in the plant industry. It is home to a group called Végépolys, which is a top center for horticulture in Europe.

Some people call it the "Green City" because of all these lovely spaces. In the past, people called it the "Black City" because many roofs were made of dark slate. Now, you might see white stone buildings instead. Whether you are looking at the river or the gardens, there is much to see. It is a place where history and nature live side by side.

Within northwestern France, Angers is the third most populous commune, following Nantes and Rennes. It is the 18th most populous commune in the entire country.

The geography of Angers is defined by its relationship with water. Three rivers—the Mayenne, the Sarthe, and the Loir—flow from the north. These three rivers meet just north of the city. Their confluence creates the Maine river. The Maine flows through Angers and moves south to join the Loire river. This location created a natural crossroads in antiquity. The city is also a hilly town. A rocky promontory rises above the lower valley of Anjou. This high ground contains the castle, the cathedral, and the medieval quarters. Because of the surrounding floodplains, the city mostly expands on an east–west axis.

The city's history is deeply tied to its ancient names and origins. The geographer Ptolemy first mentioned the city around AD 150. At that time, it was called Juliomagus. This name combined the Latin name Julius with the Celtic word magos, meaning market.

The city was also known as Juliomagus Andecavorum to identify it with the Andecavi tribe. Around AD 400, it became known as the civitas Andecavorum. This was the tribal capital of the Andecavi. Over the Middle Ages, the name evolved through several forms. These included Andecavis, Andegavis, and Angieus. Eventually, the name became the modern Angers.

During the Middle Ages, Angers served as a vital military stronghold. The city was the cradle of the Plantagenet dynasty. It also became an intellectual center of Europe during the reign of René of Anjou. To protect the city, ancient walls were constructed. A wall was built around AD 275 to defend against Germanic invasions. Later, King Louis IX ordered the reconstruction of city walls between 1230 and 1240. These walls were part of a defense system that included river chains. These chains prevented enemy ships from traveling up the Maine river. Today, some of these historic towers and walls remain visible.

The urban landscape of Angers has changed significantly over time. The medieval center is dominated by the massive château of the Plantagenêts. Inside this castle lies the Apocalypse Tapestry. This is the largest medieval tapestry ensemble in the world. During the Industrial Revolution, the neighborhood of La Doutre became a major river port. This growth was supported by textile factories and distilleries. In the 19th century, the city expanded with Haussmanian, Palladian, and Art Deco architecture. Following World War II, large council estates like Belle-Beille were built. Modern industry has also shifted toward technology, such as the arrival of Technicolor SA in 1957.

Angers is widely recognized for its connection to nature and plants. It is a leader in the European horticultural sector. The city is home to Végépolys, a leading horticultural competitiveness cluster. It also hosts the headquarters of the Community Plant Variety Office.

Because of its many parks, the city is often called the "Green City." It sits at the edge of the Val de Loire, a World Heritage Site. The city also borders the Loire-Anjou-Touraine regional natural park. Significant green spaces include the Lac de Maine and the Saint-Aubin island. This island contains swamps and natural meadows, covering one-tenth of the city's surface.

The city has earned several distinct nicknames throughout its history. It was once called the "Black City" because of its dark slate roofs. These roofs came from nearby quarries in Trélazé. Since the 19th century, the development of universities earned it the name "The Athens of the West." During the Second Empire, it was called "The City of Flowers." More recently, it has been called "Angers the White" due to its tufa stone facades. The city's coat of arms also tells a story. It features the fleur de lys of the dukes of Anjou and a key. This key symbolizes the city's role as an "ancient key to France."
