To eat these creatures, they used large, flat, and often protruding teeth. These teeth were extremely thick. They were strong enough to crush thick shells. This method of feeding is somewhat similar to how modern walruses eat.

However, not all placodonts ate the same way. One genus, Henodus, was quite different from its relatives. It developed unique, baleen-like denticles, which are small, tooth-like structures. Scientists believe these denticles, along with specific jaw muscles, suggest Henodus was a filter feeder. Recent comparisons to the genus Atopodentatus suggest Henodus might have been a herbivore. It likely used its broad jaw to collect plant matter from the seabed through filter-feeding. This shows how much variety existed within the order.

As the Triassic period progressed, placodonts changed physically to survive. The earliest forms, such as Placodus, had barrel-shaped bodies. They looked somewhat like large, marine versions of modern iguanas. In the early Triassic, their large size helped them avoid top predators like sharks.

But as time passed, new carnivorous reptiles like ichthyosaurs and nothosaurs entered the seas. To defend themselves, many placodonts developed heavy bony plates on their backs. This armor helped protect them while they were busy feeding on the bottom.

These defensive plates led to different body shapes through convergent evolution. Convergent evolution occurs when unrelated animals develop similar traits to solve similar problems. For example, some placodonts like Henodus and Placochelys developed plates that made them look like modern sea turtles.

Other species, such as Psephoderma, developed plates in a different way. Their armor resembled the carapace, or hard shell, of a horseshoe crab.

Because of their heavy bodies, placodonts had a specific way of life. They possessed very dense bone and thick armor plating. This made them much heavier than many other marine reptiles. They would have struggled to float and would have used a lot of energy to reach the ocean surface.

Because of this weight, scientists suggest they lived in shallow waters rather than the deep ocean. The type of sediment found with their fossils also supports the idea that they stayed near the coast.

Our understanding of where these animals lived has changed over time. For a long time, scientists thought placodonts were mostly restricted to the western Tethys ocean. This view changed with the discovery of Sinocyamodus xinpuensis in China. This find proved that placodonts had a much wider global range.
