These animals lived in oceans all over the world, and some even lived in fresh water. They were not dinosaurs, even though they lived at the same time. They breathed air and gave birth to live young. Plesiosaurs had a very unique way of moving through the water. They had broad, flat bodies and short tails. Their limbs changed over time into four long flippers. Strong muscles were attached to wide bony plates in their shoulders and pelvis. These muscles helped them move their flippers in a flying motion through the sea.

Learning about plesiosaurs can be like solving a giant puzzle. Early collectors sometimes thought the bones belonged to fish or even sea dragons. One scientist, Edward Cope, once thought he found a new group called Streptosauria. He actually had the skeleton upside down! He thought the long neck was a tail. Another scientist, Othniel Charles Marsh, helped correct this mistake.

Plesiosaurs were a diverse order of extinct marine reptiles known as Plesiosauria. They belonged to a larger group called Sauropterygia. These animals lived in oceans across the entire world. Some species even lived in freshwater environments. They first appeared during the latest Triassic Period, about 203 million years ago. They were very successful throughout the Jurassic Period. However, they eventually went extinct during the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. This event happened about 66 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous Period.

The anatomy of a plesiosaur was very specialized for life in the water. They had broad, flat bodies and relatively short tails. Their limbs had evolved into four long flippers. These flippers were powered by very strong muscles. These muscles were attached to wide bony plates. These plates were formed by the shoulder girdle and the pelvis. To move, the plesiosaurs used a flying movement through the water.

Like other marine reptiles, they breathed air. They also bore live young rather than laying eggs. Scientists have found indications that they may have been warm-blooded.

Researchers categorize plesiosaurs into two main morphological types. The first type is called the plesiosauromorph build. These animals had extremely long necks and small heads. They were relatively slow swimmers. They likely hunted small sea animals. The second type is called the pliosauromorph build. These animals had short necks and large heads. Some of these species reached lengths of up to seventeen meters. They were apex predators, which means they were fast hunters of large prey. While scientists used to use the terms Plesiosauroidea and Pliosauroidea for these groups, modern research suggests the relationships are more complex.

Humans have been discovering plesiosaur fossils for centuries. In 1605, Richard Verstegen illustrated vertebrae that he thought were fish. In 1719, William Stukeley described a partial skeleton from a quarry in Lincolnshire. This specimen was once used to reinforce a watering-hole slope. It was even displayed as the remains of a sinner from a great flood. In 1821, the first genus, Plesiosaurus, was named. By 1835, the order Plesiosauria was officially named by Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville.

Many famous discoveries helped shape our understanding of these reptiles. In 1823, the fossil hunter Mary Anning found an almost complete skeleton in Lyme Regis, England. This find was described by William Conybeare in 1824. This was the same meeting where the first dinosaur, Megalosaurus, was named.

Another major discovery happened in America during the "Bone Wars." In 1867, Theophilus Turner found a skeleton in Kansas. This specimen was given to the paleontologist Edward Cope. Cope famously misidentified the skeleton. He thought the long neck was actually a tail.

He named this mistaken group Streptosauria. However, Othniel Charles Marsh and Joseph Leidy helped correct him. They showed that the skull fit perfectly on the other end of the spine.

Understanding plesiosaurs requires looking at many different species. More than one hundred valid species have been described since their discovery. During the nineteenth century, many scientists like Sir Richard Owen named many new species. However, many of these early descriptions were based on only single bones. This caused some species to be grouped incorrectly into "wastebasket" categories. Today, new discoveries in the twenty-first century continue to improve our knowledge. We are learning more about their anatomy and how they lived.
