Many placoderms were hunters. Some were very large. The Dunkleosteus was a massive predator. 
Placoderms were also special because of how they had babies. Fossils show that some gave birth to live young. This is called being viviparous. One fossil named Materpiscis shows a mother with an umbilical cord. 
Placoderms were a special group of prehistoric fish. Their name comes from Greek words meaning "plate skin." 

These ancient fish had many different ways of living. Some lived on the bottom of the ocean or rivers. These bottom-dwellers included groups like the antiarchs. One famous genus, Bothriolepis, had over 100 different species.

They were a major part of the world's first great age of fish.

Modern research continues to refine where placoderms fit in the tree of life. Recent analysis of fossils from the Gogo reef has provided new clues. These fossils show that placoderms share features with many different gnathostome groups. For example, they have separate bones for nasal capsules. In modern sharks and bony fish, these bones are part of the braincase. Because of these unique traits, scientists now view placoderms as a group of basal gnathostomes. This means they are a fundamental group near the base of the jawed vertebrate lineage. They represent a critical stepping stone in vertebrate history.
Despite their long success, all placoderms eventually went extinct. They lived through the Silurian and Devonian periods. However, they disappeared about 358.9 million years ago. This occurred during the end-Devonian Hangenberg event. Scientists once thought they lost to bony fish or sharks. Now, they believe environmental catastrophes caused their decline. These catastrophes affected both marine and freshwater ecosystems. When the placoderms died out, they left ecological niches open. This allowed survivors like osteichthyans and chondrichthyans to radiate and expand. The disappearance of the placoderms changed the course of life in the oceans forever.
