Later in the 1800s, many fossils were found in Germany. These fossils were special because they showed soft parts of the body. In 1834, the official name Ichthyosauria was given to the group.

Many different kinds of ichthyosaurs lived in the past. There are now over fifty known genera.

These reptiles were not dinosaurs. They belonged to a different group of ancient marine animals.

Ichthyosaurs evolved from unidentified land reptiles that moved back into the ocean. This process is known as convergent evolution. This happens when different species develop similar traits to solve similar problems. For example, ichthyosaurs eventually came to resemble modern dolphins and whales. Their limbs were fully transformed into flippers for swimming. Some species even possessed a dorsal fin on their backs.

Their tails were vertical and used for powerful, propulsive swimming strokes. The vertebral column consisted of simplified, disc-like vertebrae. These bones even continued into the lower lobe of the tail fin.

These reptiles had many different physical adaptations for life in the sea. Their heads were often pointed and streamlined for moving through water. Many species had conical teeth to catch small prey. Other species possessed larger, bladed teeth to attack much larger animals. Their eyes were very large, which helped them during deep diving.

They were air-breathing animals, just like modern whales. Scientists believe they were warm-blooded and had a layer of blubber for insulation. This blubber helped them maintain body heat in the water. Their necks were generally short, and later species had quite stiff trunks.

Scientists first became aware of ichthyosaurs during the early 19th century. This interest began when complete skeletons were discovered in England. In 1811, Joseph Anning found the first complete ichthyosaur skull in Lyme Regis. His brother, Joseph Anning, found the torso of that same specimen in 1812.

These fossils were eventually sold and ended up in the British Museum. In 1814, Professor Everard Home published the first scientific work on ichthyosaurs. He initially thought they were a type of fish. He even gave them the temporary name Proteosaurus. However, the name Ichthyosaurus was eventually accepted as the correct term.

The formal order Ichthyosauria was named in 1834 by Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville. Later in the 19th century, many more fossils were found in Germany. These German fossils were very important because they included soft-tissue remains. This allowed scientists to see more than just the bones. Since the late 20th century, interest in these animals has increased again. Researchers have now identified over fifty different genera of ichthyosaurs.

These fossils have been found on almost every continent.

During their history, ichthyosaurs faced many changes in their environment. They were particularly abundant during the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic periods. Eventually, they were replaced as the top aquatic predators. This happened when the Plesiosauria, another group of marine reptiles, became more dominant.

Their diversity began to decline due to environmental volatility. This was caused by climatic upheavals in the early Late Cretaceous. They finally became extinct around the Cenomanian-Turonian boundary, approximately 90 million years ago.

The discovery of ichthyosaurs had a huge impact on society. In the 1800s, these strange fossils captured the public imagination. Some people were fascinated by the large rings found in their eye sockets. Others were even more extreme, like Thomas Hawkins, who thought they were monsters.
