Madhya Pradesh is a large state located in the geographic heart of India.
The physical geography of the state is defined by significant landmarks. It is situated between the latitudes of 21.6°N and 26.30°N and longitudes of 74°9'E and 82°48'E.
The history of this region spans from the Middle Pleistocene era to the modern day. Isolated remains of Homo erectus were discovered in the Narmada Valley, suggesting very early human habitation.
Following the decline of the Gupta Empire, the region saw various rulers, including the Rashtrakuta Dynasty and the Rajput clans. The Chandella dynasty is famous for building the Hindu-Jain temples at Khajuraho. In the 12th century, the Turkic Delhi Sultanate attacked Gwalior. Later, the Mughal Empire gained control after the defeat of Hemu at the Second Battle of Panipat in 1556. Between 1720 and 1760, the Maratha Empire dominated much of the territory. They established semi-autonomous states ruled by families like the Holkars of Indore and the Scindias of Gwalior. The British eventually conquered the region following the Third Anglo-Maratha War, organizing it into the Central Provinces and Berar.
The modern political boundaries of Madhya Pradesh were formed through several reorganizations. After India gained independence, the Central Provinces and Berar were renamed Madhya Pradesh, with Nagpur as the capital. In 1956, the state was reorganized to combine Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh, and Bhopal. During this process, the Marathi-speaking Vidarbha region was moved to the Bombay State. Bhopal was eventually chosen as the capital over Jabalpur. The state remained the largest in India by area until the year 2000. At that time, the southeastern Chhattisgarh region was separated to become its own state.
