Additionally, several sites in the state are linked to Jainism. Since the medieval period, the area has been a major center for Islamic culture. This is reflected in its unique architecture and long history of learning. The state contains three UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Political and administrative structures have evolved significantly over time. The state was established in 1950 after India became a republic. It was a successor to the United Provinces. This entity was renamed from the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh in 1935. The state is now divided into 18 divisions and 75 districts. Lucknow serves as the state capital. Prayagraj serves as the judicial capital. 
The economy of Uttar Pradesh has undergone a major transition. For a long time, the state was known for sugar production. However, the economy is now dominated by the services industry.
