Lystrosaurus was a plant-eating animal from a long time ago. 
This animal had a very special mouth. It was a dicynodont, a type of animal with only two teeth. These teeth looked like long tusks. It also had a hard beak, like a turtle. It used this beak to bite off plants.
Lystrosaurus lived in many places. Scientists found fossils in Africa, India, China, and Antarctica. Finding these fossils helped prove that Earth's continents used to be joined together. 
Around 252 million years ago, a huge extinction event happened. Many living things died out. But Lystrosaurus survived! It became very successful. In some places, 95% of land animals were Lystrosaurus. This is the only time one kind of land animal has ruled the Earth like that. Some fossils show it may have used torpor. Torpor is a state like sleep to save power. This helped it live through hard times.

It used this beak to bite off pieces of vegetation. The jaw joint allowed for a unique shearing action. Instead of moving up and down, the jaw moved backwards and forwards. This movement helped the animal grind food on a horny secondary palate. Because the jaw muscles were attached far forward on the skull, the face was short. This muscle placement also caused the eyes to be set high and well forward on the head.
Scientists have identified several different species within this genus. 


Lystrosaurus helps scientists understand the recovery of life after a disaster. While Lystrosaurus dominated, other animals like the therocephalians also survived. However, they were not as abundant. It took about 30 million years for the Earth's ecosystems to reach a complete recovery. The success of Lystrosaurus shows how certain biological traits can lead to massive success during times of change.
