This refers to the depressed, cup-shaped bony surface surrounding the nasal opening.

The skull also contained a large pineal foramen, which is an opening on the skull roof.

Detailed studies of the teeth reveal how these animals processed vegetation. The dentition included teeth with tiny bumps called cuspules. In the upper jaw, the anterior teeth were long and slender. The teeth located further back became smaller and slightly spatulate, meaning they were shaped like tiny spoons.

The lower jaw contained between 16 and 19 teeth. These teeth were similar to the upper teeth but often shorter. Some species even had additional teeth located on the bones of the palate, which is the roof of the mouth.

There are three recognized species within the genus: C. romeri, C. hancocki, and C. bransoni. C. romeri is the type species, meaning it is the one used to define the genus. It shows evidence of sexual dimorphism, where two different size groups exist within the adult population.

C. hancocki is the largest species, potentially reaching lengths of more than 6 meters. It is one of the largest known non-mammalian synapsids. C. bransoni is another species, though its size overlaps with smaller specimens of C. romeri.

The history of these discoveries is well-documented in paleontological records. J. Willis Stovall erected the species C. romeri in 1937. He named it to honor the American paleontologist Alfred Sherwood Romer. The holotype specimen was found in the red mudstones of the Hennessey Formation in Oklahoma. Following this, about 40 individuals were found near the town of Norman. C. hancocki was named later, in 1953, by Everett Claire Olson and James R. Beerbower. Their discovery was made possible by J. Hancock in the San Angelo Formation of Texas.

Modern science continues to refine our understanding of this genus. A study published in 2022 by Werneburg and colleagues suggested that Cotylorhynchus might be paraphyletic. This means that C. hancocki and C. bransoni might actually belong to separate genera rather than the same one. This ongoing research highlights how new evidence can change the way scientists classify the history of life.
