Many interesting facts exist about their lives and homes. They first appeared in southern Pangea during the Middle Permian. Later, they spread all over the world during the Late Permian. Some types, like Scutosaurus and Bradysaurus, were huge. They could weigh more than 2,000 kilograms. Most lived on land with thick legs to carry their weight. Scientists have studied how these reptiles moved and lived. Most pareiasaurs had a sprawling posture, meaning their limbs spread out to the sides. To handle the stress this posture put on their bodies, many had extremely robust limbs. However, the cow-sized Bunostegos was different from most other members of the group. It possessed a more upright limb posture. This made it one of the first amniotes to develop such a stance.

The history of the pareiasaurs shows a group that spread across the world. They first appeared in the fossil record during the Middle Permian in southern Pangea. During the Late Permian, they dispersed into Northern Pangea and gained a cosmopolitan distribution. This means they were found in many different parts of the world. While some later species became smaller, the group generally showed a tendency toward increased armor as they developed. Some giants, such as Scutosaurus and Bradysaurus, are estimated to have exceeded 2,000 kilograms in body mass.

Researchers have also debated how pareiasaurs are related to other animals. For a long time, some paleontologists thought they were direct ancestors of modern turtles. They noticed that pareiasaur skulls had features similar to turtles. They also saw that some species had scutes that might have become bony plates like a shell. However, newer discoveries have challenged this idea. The discovery of a fossil called Pappochelys argued against this connection. Furthermore, DNA evidence shows that living turtles are more closely related to archosaurs. Today, pareiasaurs are viewed as an earlier branch of the reptile family tree.

In recent years, new discoveries continue to add to our knowledge of this group. In 2025, researchers Jian Yi and Jun Liu described a new species called Yinshanosaurus. This pareiasaur was found in China and included nearly complete skulls. This discovery helps scientists understand the diversity of the group. Unfortunately, the entire pareiasaur lineage ended abruptly. They became extinct during the end-Permian mass extinction event. This massive event marked the close of the Permian period.
