Most of the fossils we have come from South Africa. There are three valid species of Proterosuchus. These are P. fergusi, P. alexanderi, and P. goweri. P. fergusi is the type species. It is the largest known version. It could reach a very impressive length. The name fergusi honors a man named John Fergus.

Proterosuchus had some amazing ways to sense its world. It had mesopic vision. This means it could see well in both bright light and dim light. This helped it stay active during the day and at twilight.

The physical structure of Proterosuchus was quite unique. It was a mid-sized quadrupedal reptile. This means it walked on four legs. It had a sprawling stance. The animal could reach a significant total length. It possessed a proportionally large head and a long neck. The most striking feature was its hooked snout. This was caused by a downturned premaxilla. The premaxilla is the bone at the very tip of the snout.

Its mouth was built for a predatory lifestyle. The jaws contained many sharp teeth. There were up to 9 premaxillary teeth in each side. There were also 31 maxillary and 28 dentary teeth per side. These teeth were recurved and serrated. Serrated means they had tiny saw-like edges. In adult individuals, the teeth were isodont. This means all the teeth were the same size and shape. However, juveniles had teeth that were less curved in the back of the jaw.

Scientists debate how Proterosuchus actually lived. One theory suggests it was a semiaquatic ambush predator. This would make it similar to modern crocodiles. They might have hidden in water to surprise prey. Other evidence suggests a terrestrial lifestyle. The animal lived in a hot, semi-arid environment. Many fossils come from areas that experienced frequent droughts. Its well-ossified limbs suggest it was well-suited for land. Its nostrils were located on the sides of the snout. This is different from many water-dwelling animals.

There are three valid species within this genus. All three were found in what is now South Africa. The first is the type species, Proterosuchus fergusi. It was named in 1903 by Robert Broom. Broom was a South African paleontologist. This species is the largest known proterosuchid. The second species is Proterosuchus alexanderi. It was named by A. Hoffmann in 1965. The third species is Proterosuchus goweri. It was named by Ezcurra and Butler in 2015. Each species has distinct skull features.

Proterosuchus had specialized ways to sense its environment. It possessed mesopic vision. This allowed it to see well in both bright and dim light.
