Shastri led India during a war in 1965. He had a famous slogan. It was "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan." This means "Hail to the soldier; Hail to the farmer." He died in 1966.

He graduated with a degree in philosophy and ethics in 1925. This earned him the title "Shastri," which means scholar. 
After India became independent in 1947, Shastri held many important jobs. He worked as a minister for railways and transport. He was also the minister for commerce and industry. In 1964, he became the Prime Minister of India. He helped start the White Revolution to make more milk. He supported the Amul milk co-operative to help farmers. He also started the Green Revolution in 1965. This helped more food grains grow in places like Punjab and Haryana.
Shastri led the country during a war with Pakistan in 1965. He used a very famous slogan during this time. It was "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan." This means "Hail to the soldier; Hail to the farmer." It showed respect for both the people protecting the land and the people growing food. The war ended with a deal called the Tashkent Declaration. This happened on 10 January 1966. Shastri died the very next day.

Shastri's early life was marked by significant personal challenges. He was born on 2 October 1904, in Mughalsarai. His father, Sharad Prasad Srivastava, was a school teacher. Tragically, his father died from a bubonic plague epidemic in 1905. 
His path to politics began with the Indian independence movement. In 1921, he was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's call for non-cooperation. He left Harish Chandra High School to join the struggle for freedom. This movement encouraged Indians to withdraw from government-run institutions. Shastri was arrested and jailed for his activism on several occasions. He eventually graduated from Kashi Vidyapith in 1925. He earned a degree in philosophy and ethics. This degree granted him the title "Shastri," which means scholar.
After India gained independence in 1947, Shastri entered government service. He initially served as a Parliamentary Secretary in Uttar Pradesh. He later became the Minister of Police and Transport. In this role, he was the first to appoint women as conductors. He also introduced the use of water jets to disperse crowds. In 1952, he became the Minister of Railways and Transport. He showed a strong sense of accountability during his time in office. In 1956, he resigned from his railway post following two train accidents. 
Shastri became Prime Minister on 9 June 1964. This followed the death of Jawaharlal Nehru in May of that year.
In addition to dairy, Shastri focused on food security through the Green Revolution. He promoted this movement in 1965 to boost food grain production. This initiative significantly increased harvests in Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. During a period of war with Pakistan in 1965, he became a symbol of national unity. He created the famous slogan "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan." This translates to "Hail to the soldier; Hail to the farmer." It connected the importance of national defense with the importance of agriculture.
Shastri's leadership ended shortly after the 1965 war concluded. The conflict was resolved through the Tashkent Declaration on 10 January 1966.
