John Diefenbaker was a very important leader in Canada. 
His journey began in a small town called Neustadt. He was born there on September 18, 1895. His family moved west to the North-West Territories in 1903. This area later became the province of Saskatchewan. His father was a teacher who loved history. John studied very hard at the University of Saskatchewan. He earned three different degrees while he was there. He even served as a lieutenant in World War I. After the war, he started working as a lawyer.
Being a lawyer was a very big job for him. 

In 1957, Diefenbaker reached a very big goal. 

Being a leader meant making many tough choices. He dealt with big ideas like nuclear missiles and foreign rules. His government had to make decisions about the Avro Arrow project. These choices sometimes made his job very difficult. He eventually lost power in 1963 after a close election. He stayed in parliament until he died in 1979. Many people still remember him for his many changes. He remains a major part of Canada's long history.
