He wanted peace between countries. He worked to make things friendly with China and Pakistan. He even won a special award from Pakistan.
Desai was a very old leader. He was 81 when he became Prime Minister. This made him the oldest person to hold that job. He lived to be 99 years old.
Morarji Desai was a very important leader in India.

Desai held many high positions in the Indian government. He served as the Home Minister and the Finance Minister. He was also the Chief Minister of Bombay State in 1952. During his time in Bombay, there were big debates about language. People wanted new states based on the languages they spoke. This led to a sad time when many protesters were killed. Because of this, the government eventually created two separate states. One was Maharashtra and the other was Gujarat.
After the death of Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, Desai wanted the top job. However, he lost the election to Indira Gandhi in 1966. He served as her Deputy Prime Minister for a few years. Later, he left her government because he wanted to keep his self-respect. In 1977, after a period called the Emergency ended, things changed. Many different political groups joined together to form the Janata Party. They won a huge election victory against the Congress party.
In 1977, Morarji Desai became the Prime Minister of India. He was 81 years old when he took this role. This made him the oldest person to ever be Prime Minister in India. He was also the first leader from a party other than the Congress to win. He worked hard to make peace with other countries. He helped build friendly ties with China and Pakistan. He even received the Nishan-e-Pakistan award from Pakistan in 1990.
Desai also focused on important things inside India. He helped manage the country's nuclear program. He promised that nuclear power would be used for peace, not for bombs. He even spoke with leaders like U.S. President Jimmy Carter.
Morarji Desai was a major figure in Indian politics and an activist for independence.

Desai's early life was shaped by the struggle for freedom in India. He was born on February 29, 1896, in Bhadeli village. His father, Ranchhodji Nagarji Desai, worked as a school teacher. Desai was the eldest of eight children in a Gujarati family. He began his career as a deputy collector in Godhra. However, he resigned from that post in May 1930. This happened after he was found guilty of being too soft on Hindus during riots. After leaving his job, he joined the freedom struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi. He participated in the civil disobedience movement against British rule. Because of his leadership and tough spirit, he spent many years in jail.
As a leader, Desai managed complex challenges regarding language and state borders. In 1952, he became the Chief Minister of Bombay state. At that time, many people wanted new states based on the languages they spoke. Bombay was a bilingual state with Gujarati and Marathi speakers. The Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti led a movement for a Marathi-speaking state. Desai opposed these movements and wanted Mumbai to be a Union territory. He believed Mumbai's diverse nature required a special development region. This disagreement led to violence and a tragic event at Flora Fountain. Protesters led by Senapati Bapat were met with police fire. In that event, 105 protesters were killed. This led the central government to create two separate states: Maharashtra and Gujarat.
Desai's path to the Prime Minister's office involved many political shifts. After the death of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Desai wanted the top position. He was defeated in 1966 by Indira Gandhi. He later served in her cabinet as Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. However, he resigned in 1969 to protect his self-respect. When the Indian National Congress split in 1969, he joined the INC (O) faction. During the Emergency rule from 1975 to 1977, Desai and other leaders were jailed. This period of government rule eventually ended, leading to a massive political change. The opposition parties joined together under the Janata Party umbrella. They won a landslide victory in the March 1977 elections.
As Prime Minister, Desai focused heavily on foreign policy and peace. He worked to restore normal relations with China after the 1962 war. He also established friendly ties with Pakistan by communicating with General Zia-ul-Haq. Desai was a known pacifist who wanted to avoid armed conflicts. He specifically vowed to avoid wars like the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971. His efforts were recognized by his neighbors in a significant way. In 1990, Pakistan honored him with its highest civilian award, the Nishan-e-Pakistan.
Desai also played a vital role in managing India's nuclear program. After India conducted a nuclear test in 1974, other nations targeted the program. Desai helped protect India's nuclear reactors during this tense time. He insisted that these reactors would never be used for atomic bombs. He reaffirmed that India would not manufacture nuclear weapons. When the United States offered to sell uranium and heavy water, Desai declined. He did this because the U.S. demanded on-site inspections of nuclear materials. Desai saw this requirement as contradictory to the U.S. nuclear arsenal.
His time as Prime Minister ended due to internal political struggles. The Janata Party coalition faced constant friction and arguments between its members. Rival groups fought to unseat him, and leaders like Raj Narain pulled out of the party. A major cause of the collapse was a dispute over "dual membership." Some members were part of the Janata Party and also the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. This caused enough trouble that Desai was forced to resign in 1979. Despite his retirement, he remained a respected figure in Indian history. He was the oldest person to hold the office, serving at age 81. He received the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor. He died in 1995 at the age of 99.
