He was greatly influenced by the Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi. Because of this influence, Nyerere preached the importance of non-violent protest. He was elected to the Legislative Council during the 1958–1959 elections. Following a major victory in the 1960 general election, he became prime minister. Through negotiations with British authorities, Tanganyika finally achieved independence in 1961. This success marked the beginning of a new era for his people.

As president, Nyerere focused on a philosophy called Ujamaa.

Ujamaa is a form of African socialism that emphasizes national self-reliance and togetherness. In 1967, he issued the Arusha Declaration to outline this vision. His government nationalized major industries, banks, and large companies. He also worked to expand healthcare and education for the population. One major part of Ujamaa involved creating communal farms to encourage agricultural development. However, these specific reforms were difficult to manage. They actually hampered food production and forced some areas to rely on food aid.

Nyerere's leadership extended into international conflicts and regional politics. He provided training and aid to groups fighting against white-minority rule in southern Africa. He also oversaw the 1978–1979 war between Tanzania and Uganda.

This conflict resulted in the overthrow of the Ugandan President, Idi Amin. While he was a powerful leader, his methods were sometimes controversial. He encouraged a one-party state and used detention without trial. This led to accusations that his governance was dictatorial. Despite these criticisms, he is credited with keeping Tanzania stable and unified. Many of his neighbors did not experience the same level of stability during this time.

Nyerere stepped down from the presidency in 1985. He was succeeded by Ali Hassan Mwinyi, who began reversing many of Nyerere's policies. Even after leaving office, Nyerere remained active in politics. He stayed as the chair of Chama Cha Mapinduzi until 1990. During this time, he supported the transition to a multi-party system. He also served as a mediator to help end the Burundian Civil War. In Tanzania, he is still deeply respected and called the "Father of the Nation." His life remains a central part of African history.
