In 1880, his paper on the kinetic theory of gases was rejected because the discoveries were made 25 years earlier. His work on all-metal airships also failed to receive government grants. Even his 1914 display of dirigible models at the Aeronautics Congress received only a lukewarm response. Despite these setbacks, he continued to produce over 400 works, including 90 pieces specifically on space travel.
His influence eventually reached the engineers who built the first real spacecraft. His theories inspired Wernher von Braun and leading Soviet engineers like Sergei Korolev and Valentin Glushko. These men were essential to the success of the Soviet space program. Tsiolkovsky's transition from a self-taught teacher in Borovsk to a global scientific icon shows the power of theoretical research. His life work connected the study of physics to the grand goal of human expansion into the universe.
