He was an American physicist and engineer. Goddard is famous for building the world's first liquid-fueled rocket. This was a huge step for space travel. Before him, most rockets used solid fuel. To make a rocket work, Goddard had to find better ways to move. He realized that liquid fuel was the answer for better efficiency. This invention was a massive leap for science. It moved us from simple solid-fuel engines toward modern spaceflight. Because of his work, many call him the man who ushered in the Space Age. He was a pioneer who combined theoretical math with practical engineering. His life's work focused on how machines could reach extreme altitudes.

To understand how Goddard changed rocketry, we must look at his fuel systems. Most early rockets used solid fuel, which is difficult to control. Goddard realized that liquid propellants were much more efficient. In 1909, he wrote about using liquid hydrogen as a fuel. He paired this with liquid oxygen, which acts as an oxidizer. This combination allows for much higher efficiency in combustion. He believed this method could reach 50-percent efficiency. This means half of the heat energy becomes the kinetic energy of the exhaust gases.

Beyond fuel, Goddard had to solve the problem of steering. He developed a method called two-axis control to manage flight.

This system uses gyroscopes to maintain stability. It also uses steerable thrust to change direction. These tools allow a rocket to control its path through the air or space. Without these mechanisms, a rocket would simply tumble uncontrollably. His work in aerodynamics was inspired by watching birds. He noticed how they used their tail feathers like ailerons to steer.
