It lasted from 1951 until the Soviet Union ended in 1991. This program was a way to show the world that the Soviet Union was a superpower. Unlike other groups, it was split into many different design bureaus. These groups often competed against each other to build the best machines. Famous leaders included Sergei Korolev, Valentin Glushko, and Vladimir Chelomey. Many of these experts worked under the Ministry of General Machine-Building.

Scientists like Konstantin Tsiolkovsky wrote about how rockets could fly. He even came up with the idea for multistage rockets. Another engineer, Yuri Kondratyuk, found a way to land on the Moon. Friedrich Zander suggested using the gravity of moons to help ships move. In the 1920s, a group called GIRD began testing real rockets. They launched the first liquid-fueled rocket, called GIRD-X, in 1933.

During World War II, different bureaus worked on different types of engines. Some made engines to help planes climb higher and faster. After the war, the Soviets used German technology to learn more. They brought many German scientists to the Soviet Union in 1946. This helped them build the R-1 rocket much faster. Even with these tools, many engineers faced very difficult times in history. Some leaders, like Korolev, even spent time in forced labor camps.

The Soviets also built special places for people to live in space. These are called space stations. They launched Salyut 1, the first one, in 1971. Later, in 1986, they built a modular station called Mir. Modular means it was made of many different parts joined together. This is a lot like building with blocks to make a big structure. These stations helped humans study the stars for a long time. Today, the main launch site, Baikonur Cosmodrome, is in Kazakhstan.

These bureaus were led by famous engineers like Korolev, Glushko, and Chelomey. Many of these groups worked under the Ministry of General Machine-Building. This internal competition shaped how the program developed.

The foundations of Soviet rocketry began with theoretical science.

Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, known as the father of theoretical astronautics, provided the math for spaceflight. He calculated the Rocket equation and introduced multistage rockets. Yuri Kondratyuk developed the lunar orbit rendezvous, a method for landing on and returning from the Moon. Friedrich Zander suggested using gravity assist, which uses a moon's gravity to move a ship. In the 1920s, the Gas Dynamics Laboratory began researching solid fuel rockets. By 1933, the Group for the Study of Reactive Motion (GIRD) launched the first liquid-fueled rocket, the GIRD-X.

During World War II, the program expanded through different specialized bureaus. One group, RNII, developed the Katyusha multiple rocket launcher. Another bureau, OKB-SD, focused on auxiliary liquid-fueled engines to help aircraft climb.

After the war, the Soviet Union utilized German technology to accelerate its progress. In 1946, Operation Osoaviakhim brought hundreds of German scientists to the Soviet Union. This help was vital for mastering the V-2 rocket and creating the R-1 rocket. However, after 1947, the influence of German specialists became marginal as Soviet engineers gained independence.

The program reached incredible milestones during the Space Race.

In 1970, the Luna 16 probe automatically collected lunar soil and brought it back to Earth. The program also sent probes to Venus and Mars, achieving soft landings on both planets.

The history of the program was often difficult for its leaders. Many engineers faced the dangers of the Great Purge in the 1930s. Sergei Korolev was arrested in 1938 and sent to a forced labor camp. He was later moved to a prison for scientists in 1940. Despite these hardships, the program continued to grow. The main launch site, the Baikonur Cosmodrome, is located in Kazakhstan. Today, Russia leases this facility to continue its space activities. The legacy of the Soviet program remains a central part of space history.
