During his spare time in the hospital, he studied weightlessness and resumed his rocket designs. In 1917, he even proposed a missile design using liquid propellant to the Prussian Minister of War. After the war, he moved to Germany to study physics at the University of Göttingen.

Academic life provided significant challenges for Oberth. In 1922, a university rejected his doctoral dissertation on rocket science. They labeled his ideas as "utopian," meaning they thought they were impossible fantasies. Oberth did not let this stop him. He successfully defended his dissertation at the University of Cluj in Romania in 1923. He then published his 92-page work, "The Rocket into Planetary Space." In 1929, he released a much larger, 429-page book titled "Ways to Spaceflight." This second book became known as the "Bible of scientific astronautics."

Oberth was a dedicated mentor to many future scientists.

He joined the Verein für Raumschiffahrt, or the Spaceflight Society, in 1927. There, he guided amateur enthusiasts like Wernher von Braun. In 1929, Oberth conducted a static firing of his first liquid-fueled rocket motor. He named this engine the "Kegeldüse." An 18-year-old von Braun helped him with this experiment. This connection was vital, as von Braun later engineered the Saturn V rockets that landed humans on the Moon in 1969.

Beyond pure research, Oberth helped popularize spaceflight through media. In 1928 and 1929, he served as a scientific advisor for the film "Woman in the Moon." He designed the model for the rocket used in the movie. This work helped the public imagine the reality of space exploration. He also saw the impact of experimental flight through others. His student Max Valier worked with Fritz von Opel on the Opel-RAK program. This program featured the world's first rocket-powered plane, the Opel RAK.1, which flew on September 30, 1929.
