Then, in August 1999, a research assistant named Justus Erus found a skull. This skull, KNM-WT 40000, had that famous flat face. Meave Leakey and her colleagues named the new genus in 2001. They chose the name Kenyanthropus to honor the country of Kenya. The fossils were found in layers of mudstone near the Lomekwi river.
Some scientists think these creatures might have been very clever. At the Lomekwi site, researchers found the earliest stone tools ever made. These are called Lomekwian tools. They were made in a simple way by pounding a rock against an anvil. This action created small stone flakes that could be used for work. It is not yet certain if Kenyanthropus was the one making them. We do not know if other species were living there too. The tools were made from volcanic rocks found right at the site.
Learning about Kenyanthropus helps us understand how our own family tree grew. It shows that the world was full of different living things. This small tooth size is quite mysterious because later species with flat faces usually had huge teeth to help them chew tough foods.
The discovery of these fossils happened through careful fieldwork in Kenya. In August 1998, a field technician named Blasto Onyango found a partial upper jaw, known as specimen KNM-WT 38350. A year later, in August 1999, a research assistant named Justus Erus discovered the famous flat-faced skull, specimen KNM-WT 40000. These finds were overseen by prominent paleoanthropologists Louise and Meave Leakey. In 2001, Meave Leakey and her team officially named the new genus Kenyanthropus. The name honors the country where these important fossils were located.
Scientists have used advanced technology to study these ancient remains. The skull specimen KNM-WT 40000 was extremely difficult to study because it was broken into over 1,100 pieces. The fossilization process had also heavily distorted its shape. The braincase had shifted, and the nasal region had moved to one side. To solve this, researchers Fred Spoor and the Leakeys used digital topographical scans in 2010. These high-tech scans allowed them to correct the distortions. This digital work helped confirm that Kenyanthropus was indeed a distinct and unique genus.
At the Lomekwi site, researchers also found evidence of very early technology. They discovered the Lomekwian stone tool industry, which is the earliest known tool industry. These tools were made through a simple process of pounding a stone core against an anvil or using a hammerstone. This action produced small, sharp flakes. While it is not certain if Kenyanthropus made these tools, they were made from volcanic rocks found at the site. This suggests that the hominins living in this lakeside and floodplain environment were interacting with their surroundings in complex ways.
The existence of Kenyanthropus helps explain how different species shared the same landscape. Scientists believe multiple species might have lived together through a process called niche partitioning. This happens when different groups eat different types of food to avoid competing for the same resources. This explains why their anatomy, especially their chewing features, might be so different. By studying Kenyanthropus, we gain a better understanding of the complex and diverse branches of the human family tree.
