Dietary habits for this species were very flexible. They were generalists, meaning they could eat many different things. They exploited C4 foods like grasses, seeds, and rhizomes. They might also have eaten underground storage organs or creatures higher up the food chain. During lean times, they may have eaten harder, lower-quality foods like nuts. To survive these tough periods, children may have needed nursing until they were 4 to 5 years old. This suggests a complex way of caring for young ones. Their environment consisted of gallery forests surrounded by open grasslands or bushlands.

This was the first early hominin ever discovered. Dart noticed the specimen had a small brain but was bipedal. This was a major discovery because it linked apes and humans. However, many scientists initially rejected his ideas. They believed humans evolved outside of Africa. Some thought the Taung child's human-like traits were just because it was a juvenile. It took until the middle of the 20th century for his findings to be widely accepted.

Other scientists helped build the evidence for this species. Robert Broom was a key figure in this research. In 1936, he found an adult skull at the Sterkfontein quarries.

This specimen is often called "Mrs. Ples." Broom also discovered the robust australopithecine, Paranthropus robustus. By 1946, research by Broom, Gerrit Willem Hendrik Schepers, and Wilfrid Le Gros Clark turned scientific opinion around. This helped prove that A. africanus was indeed a human ancestor. Later, the discovery that the Piltdown Man was a hoax in 1953 helped confirm the African origins of humanity.

This specimen is the most completely preserved early hominin ever found. About 90% of its skeleton is intact. There is some debate about its classification. Some suggest it is A. africanus, while others call it A. prometheus. Recent studies have dated parts of these remains to 3.67 million years ago. This makes it one of the oldest specimens from South Africa. These fossils show us how much these early creatures changed over millions of years.

Today, scientists still study how A. africanus relates to other groups. It is unclear if they are ancestral to the genus Homo or to Paranthropus. Some researchers think they might be related to A. sediba. The classification of australopithecines is currently considered a "grade taxon."
