George Pullman was an engineer and a businessman. He became famous for making special railroad cars. These were called sleeping cars. They let people rest on long trips. He even made cars with kitchens and fine food.
Pullman also helped fix the city of Chicago. The streets were too low and often wet. He helped lift large brick buildings to meet the new street level.
George built a whole town for his factory workers. This town had houses, parks, and a library.
In 1894, the workers were very unhappy. Pullman cut their pay but kept the rent high. The workers went on strike to protest. This led to a big fight. The President sent in troops to stop the strike. Many people were injured during this time. Later, the town became a part of Chicago.
George Pullman was a famous American engineer and businessman. He is best known for creating the Pullman sleeping car. These special railroad cars allowed travelers to rest comfortably during long trips. He even designed cars with kitchens and fine dining services. One car, called the Delmonico, was the first sleeping car for fine food. It even used chefs from a famous restaurant in New York. These cars were known as "palace cars" because they were so luxurious.
Before he made trains famous, Pullman worked with buildings. In the 1850s, the streets in Chicago were often very low and wet. The city needed to raise the street level to fix the sewage system. This meant many large buildings had to be lifted up. Pullman and his partner Charles Moore moved to Chicago in 1859 for this work. They successfully raised many large brick and stone buildings. They could even lift them while people were still working inside. This was a very impressive thing to do at that time.
Pullman's career grew quickly through many different business deals. He was born in 1831 in Brocton, New York. His father, James Lewis Pullman, was a carpenter who invented a machine to move buildings. After his father died in 1853, George took over the family business. He later bought several other companies to help his own grow. By 1875, his firm owned 700 cars and many important patents. He also helped lead a group that bought a large part of the Northern Pacific Railroad.
To house his many workers, Pullman built his own town near Chicago.
In 1894, a difficult time arrived for the workers in the town. The economy slowed down, so Pullman cut worker wages by 30 percent. Even though pay went down, he did not lower the rent for houses. This made the workers very unhappy, so they went on strike. The situation became violent, and 30 strikers died during the conflict. President Grover Cleveland sent in federal troops to stop the strike. Later, the Supreme Court of Illinois ordered the company to give up the town. Eventually, the town became a regular neighborhood in Chicago.
George Mortimer Pullman was a prominent American engineer and industrialist. He is most famous for designing the Pullman sleeping car. These specialized railroad cars changed how people traveled across the country. He also founded a massive company town near Chicago for his employees. This town was meant to be a model community, but it eventually led to a major labor conflict. His life represents the complex era of American industrial growth and the power of large corporations.
Pullman's engineering career began with moving heavy structures. His father, James Lewis Pullman, had patented a machine using jack screws to move buildings. In 1856, George won a contract to move 20 buildings in New York. He later moved to Chicago in 1859 with his partner, Charles Moore. At that time, Chicago needed to raise its street levels to improve the sewage system.
In 1864, Pullman completed his first railroad sleeping car. These were inspired by the packet boats of his youth on the Erie Canal. He marketed these "palace cars" as luxury for the middle class. The cars were significantly more expensive than regular railway cars. In 1867, he introduced the "President," a car with an attached kitchen and dining area. He followed this in 1868 with the "Delmonico," the first sleeper devoted to fine cuisine. This car used chefs from the famous Delmonico's Restaurant in New York.
To provide elite service, Pullman hired many African-American men as Pullman porters. These men served as waiters, valets, and entertainers for travelers. Many were former domestic slaves from the South. Because they traveled and were paid in tips, the role became prestigious in Black communities. Pullman became one of the largest employers of African Americans in post-Civil War America. These porters provided the high level of service necessary to maintain the luxury brand of the company.
Pullman was also a very successful businessman and investor. By 1875, his firm owned $100,000 in patents and operated 700 cars. He participated in several large business deals, including bailing out the Union Pacific. In 1881, he led a syndicate called the Oregon Improvement Company. This group acquired 60% of the Northern Pacific Railroad. His influence was so great that towns in Washington State were named after his business associates.
In 1880, Pullman began building a planned community for his workers.
In 1894, a manufacturing downturn caused a crisis. Pullman cut worker wages by 30% to maintain profits for his investors. However, he refused to lower the rents or the prices of goods in the company town. This led to the Pullman Strike. The conflict became violent, and 30 strikers died during the suppression. President Grover Cleveland sent federal troops to end the strike. Eventually, the Supreme Court of Illinois ordered the company to divest itself of the town. The community later became a standard neighborhood of Chicago.
