During his nine-month recovery, his father promised to fund his engineering studies if he survived. Tesla later studied at the Imperial-Royal Technical College in Graz. While he was a "star of first rank" in his early exams, he did not graduate. He later worked in Budapest at a telephone exchange and in Paris at the Continental Edison Company. In 1884, he immigrated to the United States to work at the Edison Machine Works in New York City.

Tesla's time in America involved significant professional friction, particularly with Thomas Edison.

While working at the Machine Works, Tesla focused on improving generators and troubleshooting installations. He once stayed up all night repairing damaged dynamos on the ocean liner SS Oregon. Tesla eventually left the Edison company after only six months. Some accounts suggest he left due to disputes over unpaid bonuses. He soon started his own company, the Tesla Electric Light and Manufacturing Company, to develop arc lighting systems.

As an independent inventor, Tesla pursued many ambitious and experimental projects. He built one of the first wirelessly controlled vehicles, a small boat.

He also conducted experiments with electrical discharge tubes and early X-ray imaging. One of his most famous, though unfinished, dreams was the Wardenclyffe Tower project. However, he ran out of funding before the project could be completed.
