Debs was sent to prison for six months. While in jail, he read many books. These books taught him about socialism. Socialism is the idea that wealth should be shared fairly.

Eugene Victor Debs was a famous leader for workers in America.

Debs spent many years working with labor groups. He joined the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen in 1875. He eventually became an editor for their magazine. At first, he believed that workers and owners could be friends. He wanted peace and respect between them. However, his ideas began to change after a strike in 1888. He saw that workers needed more strength to be heard.
In 1894, a massive event called the Pullman Strike began.
While Debs was in a jail in Woodstock, Illinois, his life changed.

Debs was a very talented speaker who could move large crowds.
Eugene Victor Debs was a prominent American socialist activist and trade unionist.
Debs was born on November 5, 1855, in Terre Haute, Indiana. His parents, Jean Daniel and Marguerite Mari Bettrich Debs, emigrated from Colmar, Alsace, France.

Early in his career, Debs focused on conservative labor organizations. He joined the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen (BLF) in 1875. He served as their Grand Secretary, Treasurer, and editor of their magazine, *Firemen's Magazine*. At this time, he believed that "labor and capital are friends." He promoted values like temperance, hard work, and honesty. He initially opposed strikes and sought cooperation between workers and management. However, the defeat of the Burlington Railroad Strike in 1888 changed his perspective. He realized that workers needed to organize across different craft lines to gain power.
To create this unity, Debs helped found the American Railway Union (ARU). This was one of the nation's first industrial unions, meaning it brought many different types of workers together. In 1894, the ARU became central to the Pullman Strike. This conflict began when the Pullman Palace Car Company cut wages by 28 percent.
The federal government eventually intervened to stop the strike. President Grover Cleveland sent the United States Army to enforce a court injunction. The government argued that the strikers were obstructing the U.S. mail. The presence of the army broke the strike, and thirty strikers were killed during the unrest.

After his release, Debs dedicated his life to the socialist movement. He helped found the Social Democracy of America in 1897 and the Socialist Party of America in 1901. Debs was a gifted orator, or public speaker, who could influence large crowds.
Debs faced further legal challenges due to his political views. In 1918, he gave a speech denouncing American participation in World War I. He was arrested and convicted under the Sedition Act of 1918. This led to a 10-year prison sentence.
