In 1872, Daimler became the factory manager at the Deutz-AG-Gasmotorenfabrik in Cologne. He worked alongside Nicolaus Otto, who had developed the four-stroke cycle engine. The four-stroke cycle uses four specific piston movements: intake, compression, power, and exhaust. Daimler and his partner, Wilhelm Maybach, wanted to improve these designs. They specifically wanted to create smaller engines that could run at high speeds. However, Daimler and Otto had many disagreements regarding engine design.
