In 1867, a man named Theophilus Hunt Turner found bones near Fort Wallace, Kansas. He was an army surgeon, not a scientist. He found the bones in a ravine in the Pierre Shale formation. He sent some of these bones to a scientist named Edward Drinker Cope. Cope was an American paleontologist, which is a scientist who studies fossils.

Cope named the animal Elasmosaurus platyurus in 1868. The name means "thin-plate reptile" and "flat-tailed."

Learning about this animal led to a famous rivalry.

When Cope first studied the bones, he made a big mistake. He put the skull at the end of the tail instead of the neck. Another scientist named Othniel Charles Marsh pointed out this error. This mistake became part of a famous fight called the "Bone Wars." This was a long rivalry between Cope and Marsh. It happened because they were both competing to find and name fossils. This competition became very well known to the public.

Today, we can still see what the Elasmosaurus might have looked like.

Elasmosaurus was the first recognized member of the Elasmosauridae family. This family is defined by long-necked plesiosaurs that were well adapted for aquatic life.

The anatomy of Elasmosaurus was highly specialized for life in the water.

It possessed a streamlined body and paddle-like limbs used for swimming. The most striking feature was its extremely long neck. This neck contained 72 cervical vertebrae, which are the bones of the neck.

Most of these vertebrae were compressed sideways. They also featured a longitudinal crest, or keel, along their sides. While many people imagine these necks being very flexible, research suggests they were not. They could not be held high above the water surface.

The feeding mechanism of Elasmosaurus likely involved its unique skull and teeth. The skull was slender and triangular in shape. It featured large, fang-like teeth at the front to seize prey. The upper jaw had six teeth in each premaxilla. The maxilla may have held 14 teeth, while the dentary in the lower jaw may have had 19. They likely ate small fish and marine invertebrates. To assist with digestion, they may have swallowed gastroliths, which are stomach stones.

The discovery of the first specimen began in 1867 near Fort Wallace, Kansas.

This error was noted by the paleontologist Joseph Leidy. It was also mocked by Othniel Charles Marsh. This mistake fueled the "Bone Wars," a intense rivalry between Cope and Marsh. Their competition for fossil dominance became a well-known public event in the 1890s.

Only one incomplete holotype specimen is definitely known today.

This specimen, cataloged as ANSP 10081, includes the skull fragments, the spine, and several jaw parts. It also contains the 72 neck vertebrae. Some parts, like the pectoral and pelvic girdles, were lost. These girdle elements were once loaned to a sculptor named Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins. However, they were likely destroyed by vandals in 1871. A single neck vertebra was actually rediscovered in storage by Sven Sachs in 2013.

Modern science uses these fossil remains to understand ancient ecosystems.

While the original bones are stored in cabinets, many museums display three-dimensional reconstructions. These casts help people visualize the scale of these animals.
