The genus name means "lizard of Kronos," referencing the Titan from Greek mythology. 
In 1931, a major expedition was launched by the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard. The team included several experts, such as William E. Schevill and paleontologist William Morton Wheeler. This Harvard Australian Expedition aimed to collect many types of specimens. While the Queensland Museum could not join due to funding issues, Longman assisted the team. Schevill traveled to the Rolling Downs geological group to find fossils. He discovered two large pliosaur specimens in the Wallumbilla Formation. One specimen, MCZ 1285, had been found earlier by a rancher named Ralph William Haslam Thomas. Thomas had noticed strange objects emerging from the ground in a horse enclosure. 
The extraction of the Harvard specimens was a massive undertaking. To remove the fossils from their rock, a specialist nicknamed "The Maniac" used explosives. The fossils were packed into 86 crates, weighing a total of 1,100 kilograms. 
Modern science has corrected some early ideas about Kronosaurus. For a long time, the Harvard skeleton was thought to be much larger than it actually was. This was because the skeleton had been reconstructed with too many vertebrae. Recent research from the early 2000s has corrected these estimates. Scientists now believe the animal was likely between 7 and 10 meters long.
