The Pteranodon was a giant flying animal.
It lived a long time ago. It lived near a big sea.
This animal had no teeth.
It had a bony crest on its head. The males had very large crests. The females were smaller.
These creatures were very big. They were some of the largest flyers ever.
Can you imagine flying like this?
The Pteranodon was a giant flying reptile.

Pteranodon was very special because it had no teeth. The name Pteranodon means "wing without tooth."

The Pteranodon was a famous flying reptile from a long time ago.

One thing that made Pteranodon special was its mouth. Most other flying reptiles had teeth, but Pteranodon did not.

People first found these fossils in the early 1870s.
Finding the first complete skulls changed everything for scientists.
It is helpful to think of Pteranodon as a relative of dinosaurs.

The Pteranodon was a genus of flying reptiles known as pterosaurs.

One of the most famous features of Pteranodon was its mouth. The name Pteranodon comes from Greek words meaning "wing without tooth."

The discovery of these animals involved a famous scientific rivalry. In the early 1870s, Othniel Charles Marsh found the first wing bones.
Finding complete skulls changed how scientists understood the animal. In May 1876, Samuel Wendell Williston found the first skull in Kansas.
Classification of Pteranodon remains a complex subject for researchers. Today, only two species are widely recognized. These are Pteranodon longiceps and Pteranodon sternbergi. Some scientists believe a third species, Pteranodon maiseyi, might exist. There is also debate about the genus Geosternbergia. Some researchers suggest P. sternbergi belongs to this separate genus. Another genus, Dawndraco, might also be related to these groups. The scientific community continues to study these bones to find the truth. Every new fossil helps clarify these relationships.
Pteranodon is a very well-studied animal. Scientists have identified about 1,200 different specimens. Many of these are well-preserved with nearly complete skeletons. This is more fossils than any other known pterosaur. Because they are so common, we know a lot about their anatomy. We can see how they used their wings to fly. We can even see how they might have launched into the air.
It is important to note that Pteranodon was not a dinosaur. However, it was a close relative of dinosaurs. Both pterosaurs and dinosaurs belong to a group called Avemetatarsalia. This means they share a common evolutionary path. Pteranodon belonged to the family Pteranodontidae. This family is part of a larger group called Pteranodontia. This group also includes the nyctosaurids. Understanding Pteranodon helps scientists understand the entire history of flying reptiles. It shows how specialized these animals became in their environment.
