Later, in 1914, a scientist named Othenio Abel had a famous idea. He thought the bones might belong to the one-eyed Cyclopes from Greek myths. He thought the nasal opening looked like a single eye socket.
Many different species lived in different places. On the island of Crete, a tiny mammoth called Mammuthus creticus lived. It was very small, weighing only about 110 pounds.

The history of these discoveries involves many important researchers. In 1847, Falconer and Cautley studied the straight-tusked elephant. This work helped identify the ancestors of the dwarf species. In 1902, Dorothea Bate discovered dwarf elephant remains in a cave on Cyprus. She reported her findings in 1903. Her discovery included Palaeoloxodon cypriotes, one of the smallest species. This species had a shoulder height of only 2.3 feet. In 1914, the paleontologist Othenio Abel proposed a fascinating theory. He suggested these fossils might be the origin of the Cyclopes from Greek mythology. He believed the large nasal openings in the skulls looked like single eye sockets.
The scale of these animals is truly remarkable when compared to humans. On Rhodes, an unnamed dwarf elephant was about 20% the size of its ancestor. It had an estimated weight of about 220 pounds. On Naxos, the species Palaeoloxodon lomolinoi was even smaller. It was estimated to be only 8% the size of its mainland relative. In California, the pygmy mammoth, Mammuthus exilis, lived on the Channel Islands. These mammoths descended from the much larger Columbian mammoths. They reached a shoulder height of between 3.3 and 4.9 feet. 
Different island groups show how these animals were distributed globally. Beyond the Mediterranean, dwarf elephants and Stegodon species lived in Indonesia and the Philippines. On the island of Flores, Stegodon sondaarii was a dwarf species. It was about 15% the size of mainland Stegodon. It stood about 3.3 feet tall at the shoulder and weighed about 132 pounds.
Studying dwarf elephants connects us to broader ideas in biology and ecology. It demonstrates how isolation drives the creation of new species. This relates to the study of evolution and how animals adapt to changing environments. The survival of these species also tells us about past climates.
