These animals are called subfossil lemurs. We call them "subfossil" because their bones are quite new. Most of these lemurs lived within the last 2,000 years. Today, lemur communities are much smaller than they used to be. In the past, a single location might have 20 or more species. Now, most places only have 10 to 12 species. These extinct giants were much larger than any lemur alive today.

Unlike modern lemurs, they did not spend their time leaping. Instead, many used slow climbing or suspension to move. Suspension is a way of moving by hanging from branches. Some species, like the monkey lemurs, were even semi-terrestrial. This means they walked on the ground between trees. They had shorter and more robust limbs to help with this. Their bodies were built to be heavy and slow-moving.

However, scientists did not formally describe the species until the 1890s. The early years of study were quite messy. There were too many new names for different species. The first group was the Palaeopropithecidae, or sloth lemurs. The largest of these was Archaeoindris, which weighed about 165 kilograms. The second group was the Megaladapidae, known as koala lemurs. These animals were estimated to weigh between 10 and 100 kilograms. The third group was the Archaeolemuridae, called monkey lemurs. These were heavy-bodied and weighed between 20 and 40 kilograms. They had large brains and could see well during the day.

There were three distinct families of these giant lemurs, each with unique physical traits. The Palaeopropithecidae, or sloth lemurs, were the most diverse group. Despite their massive size, these giants shared many biological traits with modern lemurs. They possessed a toothcomb, which is a specialized dental structure used for grooming. They also had relatively small brains and exhibited rapid development and weaning. Most species had high retinal summation, which helps with seeing in low light but results in poor day vision. This is evident in their small orbits, or eye sockets, compared to the size of their optic canals. They also lacked sexual dimorphism, meaning males and females did not show significant differences in body or canine tooth size. This suggests they likely had female-dominated social hierarchies similar to living lemurs.

The way these animals moved was very different from the leaping seen in modern lemurs. Many giant lemurs relied on terrestrial locomotion, meaning they walked on the ground. Others used slow climbing or suspension, where they hung from branches. Sloth lemurs were highly specialized for hanging, much like modern sloths or orangutans. Modern research now focuses on complex topics like diet, social behavior, and evolutionary biology.

Most of these species disappeared approximately 2,000 years ago, coinciding with the arrival of humans on Madagascar. Hunting is thought to have played a major role in the rapid decline of these giants and other megafauna. Other factors likely contributed to their extinction, though the exact causes are still studied. The loss of these animals changed the island's ecosystems significantly. Because many were large seed predators or dispersers, their disappearance left ecological niches vacant. Today, scientists use theories like the energy frugality hypothesis to understand how lemurs adapted to seasonal environments. Some also suggest that living lemurs may be evolving to fill the roles once held by these extinct giants.
