Researchers have identified several prehistoric occupation areas in what is now downtown Des Moines. In 2010, workers discovered a site called "the Palace" during construction for a wastewater treatment plant.

The U.S. War Department chose this name over the proposed "Fort Raccoon." The fort was built to control the Sauk and Meskwaki peoples. The government had moved these groups to the area from eastern Iowa. The fort was abandoned in 1846 after the Sauk and Meskwaki were moved to the Indian Territory. However, the Meskwaki continued to return to the area until about 1857.
Early settlement was difficult due to harsh conditions and natural disasters. In May 1851, a massive flood struck the town. 
Following the flood, the city entered an era of significant industrial growth. In 1864, the Des Moines Coal Company began systematic mining in the region. Soldiers at the fort had actually opened the first coal mines to supply the blacksmith. By 1876, a single mine near West Seventh Street employed 150 men. By 1893, there were 23 mines operating in the region. This industry helped the city grow rapidly. By 1880, Des Moines had 22,408 people and became the largest city in Iowa.
At the turn of the 20th century, the city focused on urban design through a "City Beautiful" project. 


Today, Des Moines is a major center for the United States insurance industry. It serves as the headquarters for the Principal Financial Group and Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. Many other large corporations, such as Wells Fargo and Bayer, have major operations nearby. Technology companies like Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, and Facebook have also built data-processing facilities in the area.
