Many things connect Denver to the rest of the world.
Denver is the capital and most populous city of Colorado in the United States.

The city's unique geography earned it the nickname "Mile High City." This name refers to its official elevation of exactly one mile above sea level. The 105th meridian west, which defines the Mountain Time Zone, passes directly through Denver Union Station.
Before Denver was established, the land was inhabited by several Indigenous peoples. These included the Apache, Ute, Cheyenne, Comanche, and Arapaho.
Denver's specific founding involved several competing settlements and land speculators. Montana City was soon abandoned for towns named Auraria and St. Charles City. On November 22, 1858, General William Larimer and Captain Jonathan Cox staked a claim. They used cottonwood logs to mark their spot on a bluff. This site sat at the confluence of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek.
The mid-1800s were a period of intense conflict and political change. In 1861, the Treaty of Fort Wise was signed by some Cheyenne and Arapaho chiefs. This treaty ceded more than 90 percent of their designated lands, including modern Denver. Many tribal members opposed the treaty, claiming it was signed without full consent. This tension contributed to the Colorado War of 1864 and 1865. The conflict included the Sand Creek massacre against Cheyenne and Arapaho peoples. Following this, the Medicine Lodge Treaty moved these tribes outside their traditional territory. By the end of the 1860s, the Denver area was cleared of its Indigenous inhabitants.
Economic development in Denver was heavily tied to transportation. In 1859, residents donated land to secure the first overland wagon route. This service reduced travel time from twelve days to just six days. Later, the city faced a crisis when the transcontinental railroad bypassed Denver. Leaders like John Evans and David Moffat worked to build a connection. On June 24, 1870, the Denver Pacific finally linked the city to the transcontinental line.
As Denver expanded, it became a complex urban environment. The city saw a rise in diverse populations, including German, Italian, and Chinese laborers. African Americans also arrived, many as railroad workers.
