A man named William D. Brown operated the Lone Tree Ferry. This ferry helped settlers cross the river to the area. Because of this crossing, Omaha earned the nickname "Gateway to the West." The Omaha Tribe ceded most of east-central Nebraska in 1854. Logan Fontenelle acted as an interpreter during these treaty proceedings. Shortly after, the city was informally established at a picnic on Capital Hill. Early settlers also formed the Omaha Claim Club to protect land claims.

Omaha grew into a major national transportation hub during the 19th century. Its central location in the United States made it a vital link. In 1862, the U.S. Congress authorized the Union Pacific Railroad. Construction for the railroad began out of Omaha in January 1866.
