Lake Maumelle is also located in this direction. This lake provides the drinking water for the city. Just across the river lies the city of North Little Rock. It was once the 8th ward of Little Rock. An Arkansas Supreme Court decision in 1904 allowed it to become a separate town.

The name of the city comes from a natural landmark. In 1722, a French explorer named Jean-Baptiste Bénard de la Harpe visited the area. He named a stone outcropping along the river the "Little Rock."

This rock served as a waypoint for early travelers. It marked the transition from the flat Mississippi Delta to the mountains. There was an early effort to name the city "Arkopolis." This name appeared on some US Geological Survey maps. However, the name Little Rock eventually became the official name. The capital was moved here in 1821. Previously, the capital was at Arkansas Post. That site was unsuitable because the Arkansas River flooded too often.

Little Rock played a vital role in the Civil Rights movement. In 1957, the city was central to school desegregation. This followed the Brown v. Board of Education decision. Nine African American students were known as the Little Rock Nine. They attempted to integrate Little Rock Central High School. A white mob of protesters physically blocked their path. Governor Orval Faubus deployed the Arkansas National Guard. However, he did so to support the segregationists. Judge Ronald Davies eventually granted an injunction to stop this. President Dwight D. Eisenhower then deployed the 101st Airborne Division. These federal troops protected the students. This event gained international attention for the United States.

The economy of Little Rock is built on several sectors. It is a center for healthcare, banking, and transportation. Retail is also a major part of the local economy. The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences supports research and healthcare. Several large companies have their headquarters here. Dillard's and Windstream Holdings are two examples.
