Nothosaurus looked a bit like animals called plesiosaurs. Plesiosaurs lived much later than the Nothosaurus. Some plesiosaurs had very short necks, like the Liopleurodon. Others had very long necks, like the Cryptoclidus. The Cryptoclidus was a fish eater with a neck 6 meters long. While Nothosaurus looked similar, it was not as well suited for life in the ocean as the plesiosaurs were. They were still very successful hunters in their own way.
Nothosaurus was a genus of extinct sauropterygian reptiles. The name Nothosaurus comes from Ancient Greek and means "false lizard." These animals lived during the Triassic period. This was a time approximately 245 to 228 million years ago. Fossils of these creatures have been found across the former Tethys Ocean. This area included parts of North Africa, Europe, and China. 
These reptiles were semi-oceanic animals. This means they spent much of their time in the water. Scientists believe their lifestyle was similar to modern seals. They used a combination of body parts to move through their environment. They used their tails and legs to propel themselves. They also used webbed feet to steer. Some researchers believe they might have even had a fin on their tail.
Nothosaurus had specific physical traits for hunting. Their skulls were broad and flat. They possessed long jaws lined with needle-like teeth. These teeth were perfect for catching fish and other marine creatures. Once a prey item was caught, it was very difficult to escape. 
There were nearly a dozen known species of Nothosaurus. The type species is Nothosaurus mirabilis. It was named in 1834 from the Germanic Muschelkalk. Other species include N. giganteus, which was previously called Paranothosaurus. N. giganteus was one of the larger species. Most Nothosaurus were about 4 meters long. However, N. giganteus could grow as large as 10 meters.
Scientists have worked hard to organize these species correctly. In 2009, researchers Klein and Albers conducted a phylogenetic analysis. This is a study used to find evolutionary relationships. They looked at how these animals were related to one another. Later, in 2014, a study by Liu and others performed a species-level analysis. This study included all known valid species of the family. It tested the monophyly of the group. Monophyly means that all members of a group share a single common ancestor. This research showed that the genus Nothosaurus was polyphyletic. This means the members did not all share the same immediate ancestor. Because of this, scientists realized they needed to revise how they classified these genera. In 2017, species like N. juvenilis were moved to the genus Lariosaurus.
Nothosaurus shared some physical similarities with much later animals called plesiosaurs. However, Nothosaurus was not as well adapted to a fully aquatic life. Plesiosaurs are often divided into different types based on their necks. One branch of nothosaurs may have evolved into pliosaurs. An example is Liopleurodon, which was a short-necked plesiosaur. Another type is the long-necked Cryptoclidus. The Cryptoclidus was a fish eater with a neck as long as 6 meters. While Nothosaurus looked similar to these animals, it occupied a different place in history.
Understanding Nothosaurus helps scientists learn about the Triassic period. It shows how reptiles began to adapt to life in the ocean. The fossils found in different parts of the world show how these animals spread across the Tethys Ocean. By studying their teeth and tracks, we learn how ancient food chains worked.
